April 25, 201313 yr I built my server with the default setting of MBR: unaligned. I have been reading that it is suggested that the setting be changed to “MBR: 4k-aligned” unless you have a WD EARS drives (which I do not). What is the advantage to using “MBR: 4k-aligned”? Should I consider changing my existing drives to “MBR: 4k-aligned” or is it fine the way it is? Thanks for your advise!
April 25, 201313 yr I think that you have misunderstood. The only drives which benefit from being 4k-alligned are the EARS models. For any other drive, it really does not matter - it's certainly not worth the hassle of reformatting them all. However, you can change the default setting so that any drives you add to the array in the future will be aligned.

April 25, 201313 yr Author Thank you, that makes me feel better. The thought of reformatting all the drives did not sound very appealing. I will change the MBR to 4k-aligned for any future additions.
