Trying to get a Popcorn Hour A300 to work.

Recommended Posts

I hope some Popcorn Hour and/or Network specialists can help me to configure the A300 or unraid server to work together without any hassle.

I have other mediaplayers like Dune, Mede8er and Apple Tv got to work and connecting to unraid shares without any trouble, but the PCH A300 seems to be a different cup of tea.

The A300 is set up to get a ip-address from my router which works OK, the unraid server can be reached and pinged without trouble.

In Network media on the A300 I can select my workgroup and see the unraid server and other devices. When I select the unraid server a small window pops up asking me for a username and password, but I have no user defined on my server. Leaving username and password blank doen't work, so I can't get to my shares this way.

Should I define a user for my A300 on the server?

Which Samba Security settings should I use?

Is there some kind of guest account I can set up?

How have other Popcorn Hour (A300) users done this?

Should I add separate shares for the unraid server on my A300?

Cany any of you give me hints and tips on this? Preferably give me an example on how you did it?

Thanks in advance.

I also have a Qnap TS-639 on my network and I can browse its shares freely, without user and password hassle. I have guets acces set up on it.

Has the Local Master setting anything to do with it? Currently Yes.

If the above suggestions do not solve your problem, Which device are you talking with regard to allowing it to become the Local Master?

What I meant to say is that under SMB setting the Local Master is set you yes on my server.

Is a Local Master neccessary? What does it do?

The Local Master provides a DNS-like service for all computers assigned to a specific workgroup.  This article will give you some idea how SMB works:

Ideally, you want your unRAID server to become the Local Master as it is most likely the computer that will always be 'on'.  The reason I asked is that I would be reluctant to deliberately allow any media player to become the Local Master.  Unfortunately,  some of them can become the Local Master and it could cause problems depending on which SMB version they are running. Plus, a media player would probably be the last place you would be looking if you had a SMB issue with two other computers!

That seems the problem I am having. The Dune Base 3.0 in my main room is acting as Master. I use ScottiesTech LANScanner to check this. How do I change this so that my unraid server becomes Master?

Basically, you make sure your unRAID is setup to allow it to become the Local Master.  Then shutdown all of the other computers and media servers (that can access data via SMB) and leave them off for about a half hour.  Then start up each device one at a time and allow each one to fully boot before starting the next one.  Hopefully, everything will now be able to see every other computer using SMB when you are done.  (Unfortunately, it is possible that a computer not to be able to find another computer on the network.  Usually, leaving things alone for a couple of hours will usually clear up this problem-- The computer with the issue has to do its periodic  re-poll of the Local Master and update its local table in these cases.)

If this does not solve your issue with the A300, try searching this website for "A300".  I seem to recall that someone else had a similar issue a few months back.  If that search is fruitless, try the user support site for the A300 and see what you find there.
