Share within a share

Featured Replies

I know this sounds like a strange request but I'd like the ability to create a share within a share.

A little background: I have a share called Downloads that I put single episodes of TV shows or documentaries or things of that nature that I plan to eventually watch and delete. The only torrenting I really do these days is with a private tracker that hosts UK TV content. I like to keep seeding everything I download until I delete it so I keep a good ratio on the site. Six months to a year or more may go by before I get around to watching something so it can be seeding for a long time and stuff ends up spread across many disks as time goes on. Now I'm fine with the Downloads share being spread across all my disks, however, needless to say seeding something is going to keep any disk the file is on spun up. Because of this it would be nice if I could create a share inside my Downloads share that I could assign to one specific disk to use for these torrents. Either that or some way to keep everything in one specific directory in a share on a specific disk without having to adjust split levels for everything else in the share.

I realize the obvious answer here is to just create a separate share outside of the Downloads share for this purpose but I'd prefer to keep all miscellaneous content like this under the Downloads share.

I'm fairly certain this isn't possible with UnRAID.  A "share" is really just a root-level folder on a hard drive.    For example, if you create a folder on Disk1 called "TestShares", you'll suddenly see it in your list of shares.  Delete it and it's gone.  Add folders with the same name on other disks, and they'll all be part of the same share.

So the "share management" is really just a matter of collating all content under root-level folders with the same name.

I understand how the share system works. I wasn't asking for help on how to do this. I know that this isn't currently possible. I was making a feature request. Hence me posting this in the Roadmap section.

My request was for it to be changed to allow it to work in the manner I just specified in my post. Either that or add a way for specific directories inside of shares to be able to assigned to specific disks. I'm sure there are others out there that would take advantage of such a feature.

Whoops -- sorry about that.  I hadn't noticed it was in Roadmaps ... I just did a check of "UnRead Posts Since Last Visit" and saw this.    Just started using that as a convenient way to see what's new ... but clearly I also need to look at the category !!  :)

I understand what you want to do ... you can do the same thing, for example, with Windows Shares ... share a folder and also share one of it's subfolders.  Of course the higher-level share also includes the lower-level one (and if UnRAID implements this I'd expect the same behavior).  Personally, I don't really see the need ... I'd just do as you noted (and don't want to do ) ==> i.e. just use a distinct share outside of Downloads  8)

Maybe I'm missing something basic here, but why not just specify the disk you want to use in your torrent client? Instead of the Downloads share, it would be the disk1/Downloads folder? That way the Downloads share continues to function as intended, and the torrents end up only on disk1 of the Downloads share?

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Don't know why I didn't think of that!
