Advice on new server

Featured Replies

Right,

So my power supply just went tits up and took the motherboard with it which is a pain obviously, but it does present me with the task I've been avoiding for the past couple of years, i.e. build a new one.

Now I assuming as the drives are all cool, I can simply build a new server and move the drives, in the correct order, across to the new server? I currently have a 15 bay tower but would like to go for a 24 bay rack mountable beast based on the Norco 4224 case.

I came across this server, http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/128055/SYSTEMS_SERVERS/Techbuy/TBOS128055.asp, and wanted some input as to whether it would be compatible with unRAID 5 (unsure to the minor version) which I am running.

I was pricing parts up to build myself, but if I can just get one "off the shelf" then I'd be much happier as it means I can get the wife back to Greys Anatomy quick smart.

That server is fine.  In fact, it uses the same excellent RAID controller that Pauven has used in his thread on a low-power build;  and it's got an excellent Xeon 1225v2 CPU.

You may want to read this thread for a few hints on optimizing the performance with the RocketRAID 2760 controller => but as you'll see, it's an EXCELLENT controller that will work very nicely for a 24-drive array.

Yo Gary, link the thread :)

Thanks garycase, that certainly makes my day. Time to go spend some cash.

Any chance you can order it in different configurations? The E3-1225 v2 includes the integrated graphics which are useless in this situation and that CPU does not have hyperthreading. If you could bump it up to the E3-1230 v2 it'd be perfect as it doesn't include the graphics and does include hyperthreading.

EDIT: I guess I should have scrolled down...you can configure it. While you can't get the E3-1230 v2 you can get the E3-1245 v2. I say pay the extra $36 bucks so you can at least get the hyperthreading support.

Excellent!

I have to wait until tomorrow to have the cash in play anyway, so anymore advice?

Agree that the 1245v2 is worth the modest increase in price.

I don't agree with the comment that integrated graphics is "... useless in this situation ..."  ==> it's not at all uncommon to connect a monitor to the server for a variety of reasons ... like, for example, the initial setup  :)

A monitor is not needed for the initial set up. I don't get why this idea persists. I've set up plenty of unraid servers without ever connecting anything other than a power cord, a network cable and the USB thumb drive. Every motherboard I've worked with in the last few years will skip disks with no bootable partition so it will boot to the thumb drive without changing any BIOS settings. Second, the motherboard included in what he linked to has iKVM so things like the BIOS is accessible without a monitor.

I agree you can use IPMI to do all the setup functions; but not everyone is comfortable with IPMI (personally I love it -- once you've used it you'll never want a system without it) ==> and since the motherboard supports the on-chip video I'd simply use a CPU that includes it so the option to connect a display is always there.

Another quick question as server is out with courier for delivery :-) UPS.

I'm unsure how to determine what "size" of UPS I need to cover 24 drives in the 4224 server. I'm looking at these http://www.apc.com/products/family/?id=27 but is it enough to get the 900va or should I plump for the 1200 or 1500 or should I be looking at some other UPS??

900va or above is fine.  The only thing you'll get with the higher rated units is longer run-time.  If all you want is an orderly shutdown after 10 minutes or so of power outage, a 900va unit is fine.

Mate, you're a bit of a star really aren't ya  ;)

The server just arrived, unfortunately not where I currently am as I'm at work, but going to be a fun night tonight.
