Migrating unRAID to new USB stick

Featured Replies

Hi all

Bit of background first. Currently running unRAID on an HP N36L Microserver. 6 x 2TB drives, unRAID v5 Beta 7. In the 2 years I have had it up and running I have never had to touch it, everything just works.

Now the time has come where I am able to upgrade. I have purchased an HP Microserver N54L and put 4 x 4TB drives into it. Now comes the part I need clarification on:

I plan to keep both boxes up until all my data is transferred. My friend has a spare USB stick and unRAID license which I am going to use to get the second box up and running. Once its all bedded in and the data is good I need to take my unRAID stick out of the old box and use it in the new box, since it has my license on it.

Can this be done? Prepare the old stick in the same way as I did the new, copy the key file on and I am hoping I can just copy some config files over from the new stick?

Please tell me it can be this simple :)

You can physically move the disks and the flash to the new server. Then replace the drives one at a time, as needed.

I am aware this is something I *can* do but this is not the approach I am wanting to take, thus asking my question in the OP.

(1)  Using your friend's USB stick, build your new array and transfer all of your data to it.

(2)  Copy the entire contents of the USB flash drive from the new array to a folder on your PC.

(3)  Replace the key file (Plus.key or Pro.key)  in the Config folder on the saved flash drive contents on your PC with the key file from your old system.

(4)  Shut down both systems.  Take your old flash drive and connect it to your PC.  Delete all the files on it.  Copy the saved folder on your PC to that flash drive.

The new system will now boot with your flash drive with the configuration intact.

That is pretty much what I had in mind, just wanted to confirm this would/should work :) Thank you very much garycase!

What 4tb drives are you using?

I have new, empty N54L and trying to think about what to populate it with!
