November 28, 200817 yr This looks like it would make a pretty nice unRAID case for those looking to store around 9 drives. I don't know how many drives could fit if you used the adapters that convert 3 5-1/4" bays into 4 (or is it 5) 3-1/2" bays because I've never used them. I just ordered one of these cases and will be using it to replace an old generic mid-tower case that I've been using. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 Sale ends 11/30.
November 30, 200817 yr I've got two of them, one for unRAID and one for an Opensolaris machine, running raidz2 on zfs. The unRAID machine has 3 5-in-3 backplanes (with 14 disks), while the Opensolaris machine uses 3 of the supplied drive cages, for a total of 9 disks. I have taped shut the holes on the side and the back of each case, i.e., all holes except for the top hole where the 200mm fan sits and the holes in the front of the machine, where the HDDs are. I have also removed or disconnected all fans other than the 200mm fan (and the PSU fans), including using fanless Ninja Minis for the CPUs. With the top fan at its lowest setting and the air being pulled through the drives and over the MB and the CPU coolers, everything stays below the low-40ies C during parity checking (except during 30+ C weather). The machines are really, really quite and even with both of them standing under my desk right next to me, I'm not bothered by the sound at all. I can even convince myself that I can't hear them, even though that obviously isn't true. (If they are not under a desk, they are slightly louder and I can no longer convince myself that I can't hear them.) Anyway, that was my long way of highly recommending the Antec Nine Hundred.
December 6, 200817 yr I use one for my main Windows PC, and would love to pick another one up, but this time of year don't think the wife will let me swing it, lol.
