  1. I decided to run the command line utility diskpart clean all to prepare my used unRAID drive for formatting in Windows 11. Probably overkill but it definitely cleans out all remnants of the ReiserFS file system. I also ran Western Digital's 'Dashboard' program to check the health of the drive.
  2. I'm no longer using my old unRAID server; realistically, I don't think I'd be able to sell it. It's a basic tower PC running the old v5.05 unRAID software. I built the system way back around 2010. I'd like to utilize the hard drives after removing them from the server. I plan to plug them into an external USB drive docking station and then use them to back up my Lightroom catalog and RAW photo image files. These docking stations are attached to my Windows 11 laptop. Is there anything I should do to prepare them for re-formatting for NTFS? Years ago, I used one of my former unRAID 1 TB drives after swapping it out for something larger. I installed it in one of my PCs and formatted it to NTFS. It failed a few months afterward. I was able to recover some files with special recovery software (I don't remember what I used). During this process, I discovered that Windows was having trouble with the ReiserFS partition. So I wondered if I should've done something prior to just formatting. Maybe a preclear... Someone on the r/unRAID subreddit suggested just running 'diskpart clean'. Would that be enough?
  3. I realize this is an old thread but I have a related post/question that may add to this. I have reformatted several 1TB WD drives that were used in my Unraid server. I simply used Windows disk manager and deleted the old partitions and created a new NTFS basic partition. Then I used these drives in some Windows PCs. I did this quite awhile ago, so this was performed when I was running Windows 7. Since then, I've stopped using the old PCs (and sold off parts). I've kept the hard drives and have been using with external HD docking stations as backup storage for newer Windows 10 machines. Most of these older drives have been chugging along just fine. However, a couple were not recognized by Windows 10. If I determined they were damaged after running WD utilities, I'd disassemble the drives, remove the platters and toss the metal in my recycling bin. The remaining platters make interesting coasters. A couple of these old Unraid drives seem healthy, based on the WD utilities, but Windows 10 will not recognize them. In that case, I used DBAN to wipe the drives and then I reformatted them. Then they seemed to work fine. Recently, one of those 1TB drives which successfully was converted from ReiserFS to NTFS (without wiping) is having problems. My daughter was using it with her Macbook Air and a hard drive docking station to backup her important files. Several months ago, she switched to a Microsoft Surface Pro. The same HD with docking station worked fine with her new computer until a few days ago. It is no longer recognized by Windows 10. It is listed in Disk Managment as a healthy disk drive with a active, primary partition but there's no file system. There's no way to assign a drive letter or volume. The only option is to convert from Basic to Dynamic. I'm afraid if I do convert to Dynamic, she will lose all of her backed up files. I've used recovery software to get her files and have noticed the ReiserFS partition coming up. I'm wondering if Windows 10 has a problem with old ReiserFS drives. Has anyone else come across similar problems?
  4. You can buy these from Amazon for $127.50. They are described as: Used - Very Good Minor cosmetic imperfection on top, front or sides of the item. Item will come in original packaging. Packaging will be damaged. Fulfillment by Amazon (Amazon Warehouse). Do you think it would be too risky to buy these?
  5. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822235011 Just wondering if these are good drives and if this is a good deal.
  6. I finally identified which computer was the master browser. After setting my unRAID server to be the "Local master" under SMB and rebooting the PC that was previously the master browser, now all the devices on the network appear in the network list on all my other PCs. I'd still like to figure out how to set my router to be the master browser, but that may not be possible with my ASUS RT-N56U router. Since my unRAID server is always on, this should be ok.
  7. Thanks for this info. I was running into the exact problem you described. Now I am trying to figure out how to set my ASUS RT-N56U to be the local master. I can't find anything in the settings that refer to the workgroup name or any other Windows network settings. I would think they'd put this under the LAN page or Administration pages, but I don't know enough about networking to know which setting is referring to the workgroup name. Under the LAN section there's a tab for DHCP Server that has a few fields that might be applicable. Do you know if the workgroup name (in my case it is just the default "WORKGROUP") should be entered under RT-N56U's Domain Name, DNS Server, or WINS Server?
  8. Thanks for the response. I think I found what I need in this post: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20734.msg183962#msg183962 However, the author says to set your router to be the local master and uses his Netgear WNDR3700 router as an example, but I can't find any similar settings with my ASUS RT-N56U router settings. I've been searching for "ASUS RT-n56U" and "local master" but haven't been able to find any info. I did check to see if my unRAID server was set to be the local master and it is not. I tried changing it to local master, but 'MEDIA' still isn't listed on my network device list. Maybe I need to reboot my machine. Anyhow, based on his recommendation in the above post/link, it is better to set your router as the local master. Now I just need to figure how to do so with my router.
  9. For the past few days, I haven't been able to get Windows 7 to find my unRAID server (v5.05). Whenever I use Windows Explorer to navigate to my Network it no longer displays my 'MEDIA' unRAID server in the list of network devices. All of my other connected and awake PCs are listed, but not 'MEDIA'. I can only get it to display by typing '\\MEDIA' into the address bar. How can I get my unRAID 'MEDIA' server to automatically appear in my list of network devices? This isn't really a big deal, but some applications, like Google's Photo Slideshow, which I use as a screensaver, won't allow me to select a folder unless the device shows up in the network list. All of our family photos are stored on the unRAID 'MEDIA' server, which I like to use for the slideshow. I have lots of photos, so I like to change the selection of photos every so often. I was trying to change the slideshow on our family HTPC and I can no longer select the 'MEDIA' server and the contents of its folders. I have also tried from other PCs on the network with no luck. I've tried rebooting unRAID. I've tried rebooting my router. I've tried rebooting the PC that runs the screensaver and none of these reboots have helped. The 'MEDIA' device shows up in the router's list of attached devices. This is a new problem because I almost always see 'MEDIA' in my list of network devices. Something weird has changed and it probably has more to do with Windows than unRAID. because I haven't made any changes to unRAID for a very long time (although, I am currently reading through all the instructions for upgrading to v6, which I plan to do in the very near future). Since many of the folks who frequent the lime-technology forums have lots of networking expertise, I thought I'd post this question here, hoping to find an easy solution. THANKS!!
  10. Currently, we don't pay anything for the EPG that we get with WMC and with my equipment (SD HDHomeRun Prime) I can watch and record encrypted cable channels with every PC on my network. So, what's your point? As far as I know, WMC is the best solution for watching and recording encrypted cable TV with a PC. Eventually Microsoft will stop supporting it. I'm willing to pay $30/year for a good replacement.
  11. I don't subscribe to any of the premium movie channels, so I probably don't have to worry about copy-once channels. I assume you need WMC for the Kodi+ServerWMC to work, right? I'm satisfied with the WMC UI, so I haven't tried Kodi. I'm trying to figure out how I can play and record encrypted channels with a nice EPG and UI, like WMC's, without WMC.
  12. Wow, so much negativity. I'm a happy hdhomerun prime owner and would be willing to pay $30/year if this works as well as Windows Media Center. Since Microsoft disbanded their WMC team years ago, I worry that it will no longer be supported. Maybe this will be a replacement. I too would like this to work on my unRaid server. I also don't think some of you understand how this works. I have a cable TV subscription with Charter. Most of the channels are encrypted. My HDHomeRun Prime connects to my Charter cable and because it is CableCard tuner, I can view the encrypted channels without the Charter set top box. The HDHomeRun is also connected to my home network, so any PC on the network can be used to watch cable TV. Using Windows Media Center, I can view and record anything I get from my Charter subscription. At this time you can't do this with any other software. If Microsoft stops supporting WMC, I think people like me will be screwed. If you know of another program with the ability to watch and record (also, schedule recordings in the future) encrypted channels, let me know.
  13. OK, this is really strange... I just tried running the unRAID Main menu and the MyMain plugin menu from my browser and suddenly they work. Any idea why they stopped working and now are fine??
