July 4, 201313 yr So one of my disks in my array died. No big deal, I ordered a new drive to replace it. The replacement drive is larger than my current parity drive, but based on the manual I should be able to perform a swap-disable procedure to use the new larger drive as my new parity and the old parity as the replacement for the failed disk. The problem is that once I slot my old parity in the failed drives position, and place the new larger drive in the parity slot, instead of getting a "Copy" button as expected, the unraid dashboard complains about too many wrong or missing disks. Am I missing a step here? Or is there a known issue that I am running up against? Based on everything I have read I think I am following the correct procedure but I am still having issues. Screenshots of my array configuration are below, the first is as it has always been configured minus the failed drive. The second is my attempt to initiate a swap-disable repair. Any feedback would be very much appreciated.
July 4, 201313 yr Author Also here is a screenshot of my devices tab when trying to perform a swap-disable (since the new 4TB disk is not listed on the main tab). This cooresponds with the second screenshot above. EDIT: Is the fact that the 4TB drive is listed as missing on the main tab a problem? Are there any issues with drives this large running on UnRAID 4.7? Just a shot in the dark but this is the only thing that is coming to mind. Again any help would be very much appreciated.
July 4, 201313 yr 4.7 doesn't support drives larger than 2.2TB In your specific case, I think I would either buy a 2TB drive and get the array healthy again, or if you absolutely can't afford buying another drive, you could use HPA to force the 4TB to appear to be a 2TB to allow you to get the array protected again. I really wouldn't upgrade with the array unprotected, unless total data loss isn't a big deal. (You should have backup of all critical data anyway, and you may get away with upgrading, but the chances of data loss are pretty good at this point if everything doesn't go exactly as planned)
July 4, 201313 yr Definitely agree with jonathanm -- do NOT attempt to upgrade with an unhealthy array. Replace your failed drive with a 2TB drive ... THEN upgrade to v5; and THEN you can use your new larger parity drive.
July 4, 201313 yr Author Okay, thanks for the feedback guys. Guess I will be buying another 2TB drive.
