July 16, 201312 yr Hi, I have just precleared a drive and had the results below... My question is , do I put the drive in the array or return the drive to supplier? it is maybe 2 years old.... == Disk /dev/sdg has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 64 ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sdg /tmp/smart_finish_sdg ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VA LUE Raw_Read_Error_Rate = 178 172 51 ok 42560 Reallocated_Sector_Ct = 197 200 140 ok 72 Seek_Error_Rate = 100 200 0 ok 0 Temperature_Celsius = 127 124 0 ok 23 Reallocated_Event_Count = 129 182 0 ok 71 Current_Pending_Sector = 197 196 0 ok 1013 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate = 1 1 0 near_thresh 56690 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 1401 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 1401 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 1. 145 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. 1013 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, a change of -388 in the number of sectors pending re-allocation. 18 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 72 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, a change of 54 in the number of sectors re-allocated.
July 16, 201312 yr I would not use a drive with that many reallocated sectors. Although SMART still says it "passes", it's clearly got issues, and these will likely get worse. Get a new drive
July 16, 201312 yr Any pending sectors are a ticking time bomb to the ability for reconstruction. 1013 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, The drive should not be used. You could try and do a badblocks 4 pass read/write test. That writes all sorts of patterns to the drive to test each sector out. It may force the sectors to be reallocated or refreshed. If the drive is 2 years old with that many pending sectors I would try and return it if possible.
