August 4, 201312 yr Just a question: I did replace a 1TB disk with a 3TB one. This new 3TB disk was precleared completely. I thought with a precleared disk unRAID would "copy" the first 1TB and after that it would expand the file system. Currently it looks as if unRAID does not stop here because it slowly walks from 1TB to 3TB. Is this really necessary for a new and precleared disk? I'm on RC16c. Thanks in advance.
August 4, 201312 yr When you replace a disk, its pre-cleared status is not used. It only speeds things up if adding it as a new disk to the array. Strictly speaking when rebuilding a disk pre-clearing is unnecessary although it is worth doing as a confidence check on the disk.

Thanks a lot for this fast answer - I didn't know that. Just to feed my brain: Why is a precleared disk taken into account when adding - but not when expanding? Isn't a Zero on a new disk the same as a Zero on free space of a bigger disk?

Isn't a Zero on a new disk the same as a Zero on free space of a bigger disk? I suspect that this is historical and unRAID simply does not check for s pre-cleared disk on the rebuild path. There could also be technical reasons. Do not forget that the script that is used to pre-clear disks is not part of the unRAID product, but is a third party add-on. Without that script unRAID itself does a pre-clear on adding a disk.
