I had various/numerous packages in the packages directory... I'll remove them all and try a reboot.

    Who should the group/user be on my files with only root?

    right now chown shows nobody/user instead of root/root.

    nobody/user is standard for folders/files in a share on the 5.0 series.  Any owned by root/root will not be visible on the shares as the root user is now not allowed to use samba shares..
