[SOLVED] 233 Errors on empty disk after parity sync

Featured Replies

I copied approximately 5TB of data to my array without the parity drive so the copy would go faster. After the copy, I ran a parity sync. Everything went swimmingly, except for one drive (disk10). I didn't have any data to copy to that particular drive, and figured it was no big deal. I've had empty drives before, and never had any issues. This time, I ended up with 233 errors on the drive after the parity sync. It's a pretty old drive, has been heavily used, but I don't recall anything standing out when I precleared it. Attached is a smart report for disk10, preclear report, and a screenshot. I am on 5.0RC16c. Syslog is too big to attach. Here's a link to my syslog in my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g0z3i1jhteyuim3/syslog.txt

Thanks in advance.

The problem is that the drive has pending sectors. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can try and run a preclear on the drive and that may get rid of the pending sectors. If that does not remove the pending sectors, it's time for a new drive.

I must have just glanced at the preclear results after it finished and probably assumed it was ok. I'll see about taking it out of the array and pre-clearing again for a couple cycles and see what happens. If the sectors don't get removed, I'm not concerned about ditching it, as it IS pretty old and there's no data on it. Thanks!

Keep in mind that unraid uses all the space used or unused on all the drives to recover a failed drive, so it is never a good idea to use a disk in the array that you do not have full confidence is good. Throwing in old drives just to have the extra space available jeopardizes your ability to recover if one of your large new drives fails unexpectedly, and your old unused drive that is almost always spun down fails when you try to rebuild the array. Monthly parity checks and smart reports are critical to keep your array healthy, hopefully you can weed out any questionable drives and rebuild them to new disks before they fail.

TLDR; Unraid is NOT a backup. Critical files must be kept in at least 2 physical locations.
