Dear baby Jesus.... Kernal Panic... can't find boot... etc.. (SOLVED... kinda..)

Featured Replies

We've been using UNRAID for about a year or two without a hitch. Yeaterday, we powered down the server and moved it. Upon boot, it would hang up... After researching, it appeared as if our USB drive was corrupted. We ran check disk, it had errors, windows repaired them to no avail. The system would still hang then report the error "Kernal Panic... cannot find boot blah blah blah". I backed up the contents of the usb drive, downloaded the latest stable release, then copied it over to the USB. Viola! It booted up, but has no drive config, etc. Please help me do the right thing. We can not afford to lose the data. I have no idea which drive is parity. I've included the non-working super.dat and disk.cfg as well as the "booting" sys.log.

Any help would be great! Thank you 8 pound baby jesus......

Here is what I did when I didn't have a list of which drive was what:

I connected all of the drives to unRAID drive slots but did NOT connect a drive to the parity slot.  I started the array and noted which drive was unformatted - it was only one drive.  I confirmed by browsing the other drives and verified that all of the files were there and none was missing.  Then I did an init config to clear everything out now that I had found out which drive was parity.  I assigned the drive that was unformatted as parity and all the other drives as data drives.  I started unRAID and let it compute parity on the new array.  When that was done I ran a parity check to make sure that the parity was accurate.

If you try this and have more than one drive listed as unformatted then post back with a SYSLOG for those more knowledgeable to help you figure this out.  DO NOT FORMAT THEM JUST POST BACK HERE FIRST.

This is from the contents of the super.dat, which is dated December of 2012, so may be out of date.  It does agree with the 5 drives found in your syslog though.  These are the last 3 characters of the serial numbers of the 5 Hitachis.

Parity: ...6KA

Disk 1: ...UGA

Disk 2: ...9TA

Disk 3: ...PZA

Disk 4: ...K9A

Since you have loaded UnRAID v4.7, you can use the Trust My Array procedure, but make special note of the specific warnings for UnRAID 4.7.

Bob and Rob... Thanks for the help fellas!!! My config definitely is unchanged from initial install, so I combined the knowledge from both of you guys and assigned disks 1-4 (using the info you pulled from super.dat) and left the parity drive unselected as a precaution to verify the setup before continuing..... however, after assigning the drives, when I switch back to the main screen to start the array, it still shows no devices. What the heck?! I'm doing a full power cycle to the box now.... stay tuned!

Thanks again guys. I honestly appreciate you.

update... i guess the original USB flash drive is the issue... won't boot up now regardless of version that I copy over to the USB drive... not even the unlicensed basic install.

I started fresh with a new USB drive and the demo boots just fine.... I guess I gotta wait for a new key now?? I emailed Tom.

Thanks for any additional info brothers.

Still phucked...

I got the old key working again… Boots up fine with my pro license intact, but I still can not see the drives on the homepage… I can assign them in the “Devices” section, but when I switch over to the "Main" page, I got nothing! It says "Stopped: No devices". I've tried the initconfig stuff.... nada.

Talk to me goose!!!!

Well... no longer needed my friend! In a last ditch attempt to do something while you "west coasters" were still sleeping, I tried the latest RC of 5.0. Guess what... it freaking worked! No idea why. I followed the exact same procedure I was using in 4.7.

Ultimately, I'm a super happy camper. At some point, not knowing what the issue really was will vex me, but not right now!!!!! It's working biatches!!!!

In all seriousness, thank you guys very much for helping me. Despite all the negative hype, it's nice to be reminded that there still is some really great people in this country.

(you guys better not be from Canada or something!! lol...)

Good to hear!  I'm from Florida, but I know a lot of really great people in Canada too.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

When I got my first unRAID license I got two and registered both on two flash drives.  Then I stored the other flash as a backup so that I wouldn't have any down time if the first one died.  I now have 2 more pro licences but I got them on a SD readers that returns a unique ID so that I can replace the microSD card if it dies and use the reader without interruption.

P.S. I'm from Iowa.
