September 11, 201312 yr Hey all, I am a VERY noob with this server stuff. I built my first server this past Saturday. I am leaving on a 6 MONTH trip and am storing the server at my in-laws while we are gone so I can link up to it and transfer my photos to it while we are gone. We leave in 7 days. So time is of the essence and therefore, I dont have time to figure out the lingo and forums for my questions. so sorry if this has been answered, but I cant find the solution... I have a 1Tb WD Passport drive I have been using for photo storage. It has about 80Gb free on it. I also am using a MACBOOK (NOT PC). I want to dump the contents of the Drive to the unRaid server. I created a Share on the Server called photos, and connected the drive to my laptop and started transferring the photos to the share. It was going to take 18 HOURS to transfer 60,000 files. QUESTION: Is there a way to hook the passport directly to the server and have it transfer the files to the server? I have seen SNAP, but I dont understand how to use it..... I have it installed, but I am not a linux type of guy I guess...YET... if you have a tutorial or steps how to do this, I would be very grateful!!!
September 11, 201312 yr USB 2 should be able to move 1TB in about 6 hours. Is the laptop on gig-e? You have plenty of time. Just let it run overnight.
September 11, 201312 yr Author dgaschk: HOW do I go about doing this? Plug it in through my laptop then transfer the photos via wireless network to the server, hardwire the laptop to the server and transfer through that, or plug the usb direct to the server?
September 11, 201312 yr Plug the laptop into your router -- doing it wirelessly will slow it down a good bit. Then just connect the USB drive to the laptop; start the transfer; and let it run until it finishes tomorrow.
September 11, 201312 yr Also, note that while a typical USB 2 connection can indeed transfer a TB in about 8-9 hours, that's only true if you're transferring a lot of very large files. Transferring 60,000 photographs slows this down a good bit, as there will be a directory update as each file is closed ... this results in an extra write and several head movements. I'd be surprised if it actually takes 18 hours; but not surprised at all if it takes 10-12 (or even a bit longer). However, the time estimate you quoted may have been while doing this wirelessly ... if you connect it directly it will be much faster.
September 12, 201312 yr Author Thanks! Got a Gigabit Switch hooked up from my Router to my comp and server. HARDWIRED. I then only copied about 30000 images and it took about 3 hours to complete, but it was much quicker! gigabit...whodathunk.... Thanks for all your help!
