TCP/IP Lockup - HW? X8SIL-F-O & SAS2LP-MV8

Featured Replies

I just had TCP/IP "fail".

I can't get into my server through telnet or web access.  It is not responding to SMB requests either.

Using IPMI I found in my syslog:

"irq 47: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option"

I'm running on an X8SIL-F-O, and a newly installed SAS2LP-MV8.  All non-essentials were earlier disabled in the PC bios.

I'm guessing this is more HW problem than Unraid 5, but not absolutely sure.  Any thoughts?

What does "irqpoll" do exactly?  I just added it to my syscfg file.

A quick google search will bring a lot of answer to what irqpoll does. I had issues with previous version of unRAID running on my Andromeda build with 2 SASLP (not SAS2LP) cards.  I move to ESXi, and M1015, Chenbro expander and an Areca 1222 those went away.  I honestly do not know if the new hardware made it go away or if it was the newer version of unRAID I went to.  I think it was the version of unRAID that fixed the IRQ issue for me and not hardware.  I had not done the above mentioned hardware upgrades but had update the OS and not needed the irqpoll option any longer.

The only other thing you can try is moving the SAS2LP card to a different PCIe slot on the motherboard.  That might alleviate the problem also.

Today, after installing the irqpoll options yesterday - irq46 is now disabled.

Ugh.

Ugh.

It might not always fix the problem.

When I was running anything before 5.0rc12 I had to add a line in my syslinux.cfg like:

label unRAID 5rc8
  kernel bzimage.5rc8
  append initrd=bzroot.5rc8 irqpoll rootdelay=10

You can try a similar append line in your syslinux.cfg and see if it helps.

Other than that, look for a BIOS update for your board, a BIOS update for your SAS2LP card, and.or moving the card to a different PCIe slot.

Thank you.

1)  What does adding that line that you showed do, as opposed to what I did?  What's the difference?

2)  My SAS2LP board is running the latest firmware.

3)  I will check to see if there is a newer one for the MB, there very well could be.

4)  I could move it - would rather solve the root problem to be honest because it is possible (unlikely but possible) that someday I might want to add another card, thus I'll be back int he same situation.

Thanks again :)

Most likely nothing

Good

Good start, sometimes linux kernels in combo with BIOS version can cause issue

Moving it is a last resort, but might be the only thing that helps the issue.

I updated the IPMI firmware, as well as the MB BIOS...  (Might as well do them both since I was risking problems, and IPMI has been uncooperative with giving me a console quickly after reboot - to get into the BIOS for instance)

Anyway - I did not move the card (yet).

I was experiencing lockups on my Win7 PC as well - these problems always occurred during large file copies.  I seemingly have solved that problem with:

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

I have successfully now moved like 100GB to the server without an irq problem.  So either updating the bios solved it, or an overly aggressive Win7 tcp/ip connection was causing problems on both ends.

I am gratified all SEEMS to be well.

Glad to hear that your issue appears to be solved.

Can you mark the thread solved so that anyone having similar issues can find this easier when searching.
