Replacing parity drive

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, this is my first crack at replacing my parity drive so I want to make sure I'm doing things correctly; all drives are functioning, just want to add space. So, I've attached my new drive, a 2 TB when all of the other disks are 1 TB. I've booted the server and stopped the array. Is it now as simple as changing the parity drive to the new 2 TB and re-allocating the old parity drive to another "disk"? When I try this I get the message "stopped, invalid expansion" error message with no ability to start the array.

One step at a time. First replace the old parity drive. Start array. You might want to pre-clear the old drive once the new one is done parity calculation. Then add the old for space and start the array.

Have fun.

DO NOT try to re-use the old parity disk until AFTER you have the new one installed and initial parity calculated, and a subsequent parity check performed to ensure you can read the newly written parity drive.

It you do try to do it in one step, unRAID will attempt to use the old disk as parity and will ignore your new drive.

Glad I checked in, thanks guys. Just so that I am crystal clear, when you say replace the old parity drive, that's just a matter of assigning the new disk to parity correct? I do not have to physically replace the old parity drive with the new one, i.e. the same cable and SATA position.

That's correct -- you simply change the assignment.
