Think I've Got a Bad Drive

Featured Replies

I think I have a bad drive in my array.

I use it solely for media streaming. Since I recently added a 1TB drive to an empty bay and put it in the array, I'm getting extreme delays in load and playback (stalling for minutes at a time). It seems to be only with media that is stored on the recently added drive.

So my question is how can I check the drive? (I'm a total noob at this stuff still)  :o

Unfortunately, it's also taken up the last spot in my current drive cage, so I can't just add another. I may have to just swap it out for a new drive (which is going to be a pain to move the data, but I can deal... just need to find some instructions).

Thanks.

What I do to check is run a SmartTools Test. You can run the test by logging into unMENU if you have that installed. Then go to the "Disk Management" Tab and then select the hard drive and click "Short Smart Test". Wait about 5 mins and then click "Smart Status Report"

Then copy something that looks like this and post back (Also after you post the short test you should probably run the long smart test but that will take 3-5 hours depending on how big the drive is):

smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdd

smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

Selective self-test flags (0x0):

If you have a spare use it now. The drive has 40 pending sectors. Pending sectors on any drive requires immediate remediation. This drive needs to at least be rebuilt. Rebuilding the drive onto itself may clear the pending sectors.  Running pre-clear is a better option. If the pending sector count does not return to zero then the drive should be RMAed.

  • Author

So move the data onto other drives, then run a pre-clear?

So move the data onto other drives, then run a pre-clear?

This is not required if you have a parity drive but will provide extra protection.

  • Author

Ah. Ok. So if I went out tomorrow and picked up a 3TB drive, removed the bad drive (for now), pre-cleared the new one... I can then do a rebuild? Even though the size is different?

Where would I find instructions on how to do this?

Pre-clear the new drive to make sure it's good then assign it to the correct data slot. When the array is started the disk will rebuild and the filesystem will then be extended to use the entire disk.

  • Author

Excellent. Thank you for the help. I'll pick up a new drive today or tomorrow.

Here's the results of the long test (if they matter):

Selective self-test flags (0x0):

After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.

If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

Your current pending sectors went from 60 to 496. That is not a good trend and I would replace that drive sooner rather than later.

Bought a new 3TB today. Putting it in now.

Can I use the array when it's missing a drive? :/

Can I use the array when it's missing a drive? :/

You can use the array while a drive is missing, unless you assign the drive to the array and you haven't precleared it.  If you do that the array is taken offline until it is zeroed out.

Note that while you're missing a disk from the array you have no protection, so if something goes wrong with one of your disks you could lose the data on that disk.

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

Excellent. Thanks very much.

I'm running the pre-clear now. Will probably take 36 hours or so. The other drive is still in warranty, so I've RMA'd it.

Thanks for all the help. I'll update once the new drive has completed the pre-clear and is in the array.
