[Solved]Question Re: Cache disk and mover

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to using Unraid but am determined to make this work.  I just finished my build using an old AMD Phenom 9550 quad and other parts from an old family computer that I just couldn't throw away.  You know that box of junk we all have that our wife wishes would vanish. lol

Using UnRaid version 5 with Plex installed to stream media throughout the house.

My questions are related to the Cache functions and hope you all can clear things up for me.

I transferred all my movies over to the array before assigning parity, assigned parity and have gone through the sync process.  Had trouble with Plex initially but the

"Forums" are great for information, just wish people would remember that not everyone that reads the forums is up on the acronyms.

I have a Cache drive but I don't understand how the "mover" is supposed to know where to put files on the array.  I have a Share for Movies that has sub directories of Kids Movies and Gen Movies;  Documents share, and Pictures share.  If I transfer 4 movies, 30 pics, and some documents onto the cache drive, how does the "mover" know which directory to put them into?

Currently the "mover" is turned off so that it doesn't kill my 'applications' share where Plex is located.  Am I correct in my thinking that the mover won't touch

'applications'  as that  is set to "Use Cache Disk = Only?

Thanks for the help.

Correct, cache-only won't be moved.

Typically, you don't write files to cache. You write them to the share and they will be put on cache until mover moves them.

The shares that you want cached must be set to use cache.

If you want a share to be on specific disks, set the Included Disks for the share.

If you want a share to not use specific disks, set the Excluded Disks for the share.

If you don't care which disks a share uses, leave these fields blank.

The mover will take these share settings into account when moving files from cache.

I had this sort of trouble too when I first used a cache disk. Install it, enable it for whichever shares you prefer, then literally forget it's there. Make your data transfers to the same shares (and locations: //server/tv) as you did BEFORE the cache was installed. The mover script should move the content over at the specified time.

If you want to test it, move a small file to a cache disk enable share, then open the cache disk in Windows Explorer or whatever you use. The file path will be listed on the cache disk. After mover runs, it disappears from cache and will be visible on the protected share.

Hi trurl and Jeff,

Thank you for the quick response and the advice/clarification.  I have setup the shares that I want to use the cache as you suggested, we will see tonight if

I did it correctly.

Thanks again,

David
