New to unRaid, Info on USB Backup

Featured Replies

So I will be installing my unRaid server this weekend, and migrating my data from a WHS/FlexRAID setup.

I have a question relating to the unRaid license keys.

I am looking to purchase a license, but see that it is tied to my USB key ID.

1. Does this mean that if I lose my USB key, or it stops working, I am out the ability to reinstall unRaid on a new key?

2. What if I want to upgrade my USB to some new low profile USB drive in the future? Am I completely tied to the one USB key I originally purchase the license for, and will need to purchase another license in the event I lose/need to replace my USB drive?

as far as I understand if your key stops working

you would send the email to Lime tech and request to transfer your license to new key.

the issue is to find key that works.

since the license key is tied to USB drive ID you need to find the USB that have a unique ID.

search the WiKi here for proven  models that work.

to try the system you can use any USB but for license I would buy the proper to begin with.

not sure what the policy for upgrading the key...

not sure how can you loose the USB key if it MUST be plugged in into working server all the time.

Limetech is very reasonable when it comes to moving keys to a new flash drive if one fails.    But it's also very inexpensive to buy a backup key when you purchase the license => you don't have to even assign it to a specific flash drive when you buy it ... you can do that at any time in the future.

As for buying a low-profile flash drive => if you want to do that, I'd do it now, so you don't have an issue switching later.    Note that you can also buy an internal USB header -> Type A plug and mount your flash drive inside the case, so it's completely out of the way.

DOH, I somehow did not know these internal USB headers existed, of course they would.

I already ordered a low profile key, I'll grab one of these guys to complete it all.

Thanks for the info guys. The reason I had asked, is that historically I move a good amount, and have a bad habit with flash drives. Although, this use case is quite different, as you said, it will be plugged in and not touched again.

Now to take the unRaid dive this evening after work.
