Ice_Black
Does anyone know which mini-ITX Socket 1150 Motherboard that is compatible with ESXi? I need 6 sata ports as long it compatible with ESXi. Quote Link to comment
garycase
C226 boards with a Xeon should do the trick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157466 Quote Link to comment
Ice_Black
There is other one I have found: http://www.asus.com/Commercial_Servers_Workstations/P9DI/#overview Quote Link to comment
Whatever
While i don't have first hand experience with that motherboard, i would be cautious buying an Asus without being absolutely sure it will work with VT-d. The horror stories are aplenty. Quote Link to comment
garycase
The AsRock board I suggested is what I'd use. AsRock's specifications page for that motherboard specifically lists ESXi support. This is also shown on Page 8 in the manual: ftp://66.226.78.21/manual/E3C226D2I.pdf In addition, it clearly shows that Vt-d support is included in the BIOS configuration. See Page 40 in the manual. Nice! I am looking for 16GB Ram, which one will be compatible for ASRock E3C226D2I? Amazon or Scan link would be helpful Quote Link to comment

Ice_Black
Thanks garycase. I have built a new server, E3C226D2I motherboard with Intel i3-4130T CPU I am trying to install ESXi and its freeze on the "Initializing IOV"... I have contacted asrock support and waiting for reply.. I might made a mistake ordering Intel i3-4130T CPU... Quote Link to comment
garycase
Yes, you made a mistake with the i3. NONE of the Haswell i3's support Vt-d, which is necessary for ESXi. As I noted in my original post, "... C226 boards with a Xeon should do the trick ..." You should have bought an E3 series Xeon -- or at least an i5 with Vt-d support (the Xeon is a better choice). Time to swap your CPU Quote Link to comment
garycase
... by the way, if you're not sure about whether something will work, it's a good idea to ask BEFORE ordering it Quote Link to comment
Ice_Black
Oh well Mistakes happen... I always thought ESXi can run without Vt-d if I am not using PCI sata controller, etc. I might order Intel CPU Xeon E3-1230 v3 According to http://www.servethehome.com/Server-detail/intel-xeon-e3-1230-v3-review-haswell-xeon-benchmarks/ Very good idle power consumption, only 21w Quote Link to comment
garycase
I might order Intel CPU Xeon E3-1230 v3 An excellent choice. Very good idle power consumption, only 21w ALL of the Haswell-based processors have very good power efficiency. I've been very impressed with the power consumption on Haswell-based systems. bednarz
Ice_Black, could you please provide your feedback about this motherboard and Esxi compatibility? Does passthrough work? I am thinking about similar setup. Quote Link to comment
CrashnBrn
Bump, any update? How is esxi working out? Also I hear there are some fan issues with esxi, how loud is the box, if you are still using it? Quote Link to comment
