updating from rc15 to the last stable release...

Featured Replies

As the topic says  i have some problem figurimg out the best way to perform the update . Ive read many topics but im more confused .. some say to start from a formated drive  other say to swap the bz image ...  need  some help here guys

Copy 'bzimage', 'bzroot', and 'readme.txt' from the latest release zip file to your Flash and then reboot your server.

Actually...I misread your question. If you are going from beta to a stable release, format the flash and unzip the stable release on the flash drive.

If you server is running just fine and parity is good, many of us just copied over the the bzimage, bzroot and the Readme.txt files.  And then rebooted the server.

To be on the safe side, make a backup copy of your flash drive onto another computer.  If some issue should crop up, you can easily get back to your old configuration with a minimum of hassle.

Your likelihood of having a problem depends mostly on the plugins that you might have installed.  Very few people have had any issues.

You can always reformat the drive and reinstall unRAID from scratch if you have major problem.  I personally consider this to be a last resort...

What about my data?  If i wipe the usb key

What about my data?  If i wipe the usb key

With ver 5.X, nothing relating to your data is stored on the flash drive.  In fact, it usually figure out exactly what drive is the parity and which drives are the data drives.  It then sets up the array and (on the first boot) requiring you to actually start the array after you verify that everything is as you expect it.

Now if you have plugins installed, you may lose their settings if the settings were stored on the flash drive.  You might also use lose the the actual plugins in many cases (if they were stored on the Flash drive) which is normally not that big a loss. This was true in my case (Simple Features and SOME of its plugins), and that is why I copied over ONLY the three files!  (I understand some people use the cache drive to store plugin settings on and they would not use their settings

Reason for edit:  Wrong Word!!!

And if you do wipe the flash to start over, if you have a Plus or Pro unRAID license don't forget to copy your Plus.key or Pro.key file back onto the flash (from your back up) so that unRAID can allow the appropriate number of drives to be configured.

Wow great support here !

Ive been using unraid only for the past few month (basic version) and is so good im thinking about getting a Plus license since a got so many drive laying around .

i think i might do a fresh install on a new key like the SanDisk Cruzer Fit. the only addon i have is for the UPS so is not a big loss.

Just wanted to make sure that my data drive wont be wiped clean when a boot on a new key

Thanks everyone !
