Fan Controller Recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm thinking that I might put a fan controller in my box, see my sig for my build, so I can up the fan speed during parity checks, as during our hot Aussie summers the temps of my drives are nudging 40c, which is not so bad when only one disk is being accessed, but during parity checks, not so great.

I like my Supermicro X7SPA-HF-D525, but not being able to adjust fan speed through IPMI is a bit of a let down, well at least I don't know how if possible, someone correct me please.

I've got 6 Cooler Master Excalibur fans(4 pin) which I want to keep as they are quiet and easy to clean as the blades are removable, currently controlled via the MB BIOS, but the low fan setting is just a little too slow currently 770rpm, the next setting up bumps them up to around 1300rpm,  which is ok for a parity check as I usually do that overnight, but I'd like around the 1000-1100rpm.

So any recommendations for a 6 x fan controller? Not too worried about cost(within reason) but it has to be reliable.

Thanks

Only issue I have had with fan controllers is some combos and fans introduce coil whine on the fan motor due to the pulse modulation. Corsair fans are notorious for this. Won't know till you try though...

Do you need a 6 channel controller? Or could you say have exhaust fans on one channel and intakes in a second? I have used the Bitfenix controllers - work fine. Just make sure the channels are powerful to control the number of fans you want. Typically the fewer channels, the less expensive...

That is a nice and simple one. Also fits in a 3.5 bay which is nice. There are some more advanced ones you can get with thermal leads, so you could put one on a hard disk for insurance. If it gets above x temp go to y speed. But those can get pricey.
