Extremely slow parity check....

Featured Replies

Recently, I added 2x3TB HDD into my unraid server. They are not yet precleared and are not yet part of my array.

I have upgraded to unraid 5.0.4 in order for unraid to support those large HDD.

After upgrading to 5.0.5, everything worked as usual.

Then, I upgraded my unraid to pro, since those 3 additional HDD are my 6th and 7th discs in the array.

After ungrading my unraid with the pro key, upon reboot, unraid started performing an automatic parity check.  (the two new HDD are not yet in the array).

The problem is, the parity check is EXTREMELY slow...it reads 400-700 kb/s!  I have let the parity check run for about 7-8 hours, it had completed only 4% of the task and was still running at 500 kb/s...so I stopped the parity check.

I restarted the array, and everything works fine...no errors whatsoever, and transfer speeds from my network to the unraid server are normal (40-45 MBPS for me).

I have no idea about what should I do? please, any comment, question or suggestion is more than welcome!

First thing I would suggest you do is to post a complete list of all the hardware in your server-- Motherboard, Memory size, Count (and size) of hard drives with model numbers and any SATA expansion boards that you may have added.

Second thing is to post a syslog which shows the period when you are trying to do a parity check.  Instructions for doing this can be found in the first post of this thread:

This information will permit the more knowledgeable members to assist you in determining what the problem is.

Thanks. I will do that.

Sorry if the system log is big...Thats what I found...disk 1 (sdd) generates lots of errors, and here is also a SMART report I got from that disk after running a short test on it.

Two of my other disks show unusual smart reports: sde (my parity drive) and sdb (my disk2)...disk2 has me worried too, more than the parity drive.

No red balls, unraid shows parity to be valid....

Please, what should I do next? My guess would be to change disk1 (or maybe is it a bad cable?) and then change disk2 before it fails?

I really know not much about it though...so any help is more than welcome!...
