[SOLVED] Windows Cannot Access Unraid Directory

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded to unRAID version 5.0.4, and now my windows machine cannot access some of my directories. I get the following error

Windows Cannot Access \\Tower\Photos\Family Pics

The sever shows up on my network fine, and I can browse the base shares (e.g. Photos) but I'm denied access to the subdirectories. Is it possible the permissions have not been propagated to the subdirectories?

I've tried changing the permissions to the folders on my server, I've tried adding a matching user and PW to both my windows machine and my server, but I have not been able to find a solution. Currently the permissions on this directory are set to public, but I've tried setting them to private as well. Neither seems to help.

Any help is much appreciated!

What version of unRaid did you upgrade from?  4.7?

Did you run the New Permissions utility?

From the upgrade instructions:

Go to Utils/New Permissions and execute that utility to change file ownership and permission settings. This is necessary for proper operation of the 5.0 security model.

Wow. I missed that somehow. I tried to follow the upgrade instructions line by line because I was concerned about losing data.

Looks like I overlooked that, though. Thanks!

I'll run the utility and report back once it's finished.

EDIT: Is there a way to monitor the progress of the utility? My server's browser interface has been prone to hanging up since my upgrade, so I'm never certain something like this is actually working if there's no progress reported.

AFAIK there's not a way in the gui, you could always telnet into the server and monitor running processes using top.

If you were running 4.7 you probably need to delete any saved credentials if you were using the root account for file access (I don't know about other user accounts).  This was the default for 4.7 and below, as far as I'm aware.  I've only used 5.0 betas and higher.

Which command am I looking for? There looks to be a lot of processes going, but not a lot of processor activity.

A separate window will open when running the New Permissions utility. This window must remain open until it reports completion. The window indicates progress.

It opens a second window, but it's blank. I've tried it a couple times, but the window never populates with anything.

Try a different browser. Chrome works for me.

You can also run it from a telnet/console session using the 'newperms' command.

If given no parameters that acts just like the GUI option.  Alternatively you can give a parameter as a path to just run it against that path and its contents.

Great info! Thanks for all the feedback. It looks like it ran, and that seems to have cleared up my issue!

Thanks again for the help!
