unRaid server disconnects when transferring files

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am new to UnRAID and just installed the latest version (unRAIDServer-5.0.5-i386) I precleared two 3TB Western Digital Red drives and since I'm not really sure what to look for I have no real idea if everything was ok. It did say that it passed the smarttest. I went ahead and installed unRAID and formated one of the drives and assigned it as drive 1. I created one share on the drive called MEDIA and folders called Movies, TV, and Pictures. I chose split level 2 and highwater. I started the array and proceeded to copy over my files. Basically my setup before was just a external 1 tb WD Black drive hooked up to my mac. I selected the folders from the Black Drive in my macs finder and dragged them to the Media Share. Every thing started fine, but within a half hour transfers froze and stopped. I got a warning saying "Server connections interupted" and it gave me a choice to ignore or disconnect all.

and it was as if the server went offline. I tried to refresh the main unRaid page in my browser but it said cannot connect to 192.169...etc

I hit ignore one time and waited and then the server was available again. I tried to recopy the folder over, but I get a message "The operation can't be completed because the item " "is in use. I have attached my preclear results for both drives and a syslog. I have also switched my ethernet wire. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if I need to include any other info that could be helpful.

Thanks in advance for everyones help,

What version of OS X?

Try mounting as SMB and drag and drop using the SMB protocol, and not using AFP.

(in Finder menus GO/Connect to Server.../ and be sure the prefix is something like: smb://192.168.1.10 or smb://Tower/ etc.)

Also, pop your flash drive in the USB port on your mac and run Disk Utility and fix errors. (probably not causing this problem, but might prevent a future problem. :)  )

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion. I have mounted the drive as you suggested by going to Connect to Server in the finder menu. It connected and I tried transferring a folder containing many different tv show episodes. After transferring about 5 gb it stopped and did the same thing. A window popped up and said Server Connections Interupted and listed my flash drive, disk 1 and my share.  I should also mention that I have tried transferring large files/folders directly off of my mac hd to the server and I get the same problem. I am also on OSX 10.6.6

Did anything look funny on my syslog or preclear files? I'm not sure if I downloaded the files correctly.

Thanks,

Spencer

hmmm...

Lots has changed since 10.6.6.

OS X wasn't so good with samba networks back then...so lets go back to AFP...sorry about that. Go/Server/"afp://tower/", etc.

From what I could tell in your logs, unRAID is fine, and setup correctly. (subject to one of the many smarter folks chiming in)

I suspect the problems are in either your LAN network, or your Mac.

Are you trying to run TimeMachine during this? (if so, stop it for awhile.)

Don't have multiple 'copy' operations going at the same time... but, Try copying 'more slowly'!  ::)

Instead of the whole drive at once, a folder at a time.

and What are you copying? Is it a HUGE file? (as in Gigabytes large?) Is it many many small files?

Edit: Your logs posted nicely.

I re-read your syslog...it could be a coincidence, but right at the end of the log (about where I'd guess your copy operation stopped), it looks like your DHCP IP Address had to be renewed between unRAID and your router.  Try setting a STATIC IP address for unRAID on the router and on the unRAID box.

Could someone more knowledgable read the SMART reports?

The Spin-up-times appear to be reported as overly long on Both drives.

Is there something about WD drives that would report out this way? And is that a concern?

How are you shutting down?

Run reiserfsck on the data disks. See Check Disk Filesystems in my sig.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just wanted to thank Dale and dgaschk. I changed computers to a mac that was running OSX 10.6.8 and it worked better. I was able to transfer large files and folders. It only disconnected me once in a while. Thanks again to the community.

If your Mac is capable, the update to OS X Mavericks (10.9) is free.

It has much improved support for SMB.

...set Unraid to use a static IP address, not a DHCP assigned address (as this could potentially change).  Here's how:  http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial#Setting_a_static_IP_address

Set it to an unused IP address (and hopefully NOT in your DHCP range).

If there are only a few things on your LAN, you can try just using a high numbered address...something like 192.168.1.123

However, the best way to do this (in addition to changing the unRAID network.cfg file) is to change your router's settings. This varies a little from router maker to router maker, but usually, the router itself is at 192.168.1.1.  You want to leave DHCP 'ON'...(that will allow your router to assign addresses from 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.255).  You're looking for the settings for 'fixed address' or 'static IP'...something like that. Hopefully, you can set a 'range' of addresses that are *NOT* used by DHCP.  Something like restricting DHCP to "192.168.1.199", and fixed IP addresses in the range of "192.168.1.200-192.168.1.255".  Then give unRAID one of the fixed addresses...that's also a good place for your media player, your printers, etc...the things that are pretty much 'fixed' on your LAN. Then you never have to guess at their addresses.

I use unRaid 5.0.4 also from Macs running 10.6.6 and 10.6.8 using AFP and really don't have any issues with disconnects. I don't know if something changed in 5.0.5 but I would try changing to a static IP address first. If you upgrade to 10.9  (as a last resort only) you may just open a can of worms depending on what apps you run. Do you have any switches in your network? If the problem continues I would try to eliminate distance and switched by moving your Mac or unRaid close with just a short  cable in between to test it.

Wow thanks for all of the replies. I am actually in the middle of moving to a temporary place and I'm not sure if its worth it for me to set up the computers for a few months. (Limited space) I'll probably have a ton of questions once I have more time to start playing around with it again in a few months. I will try all of your suggestions like setting static IP and updating the OS.

BTW, I had gotten all of the data transferred over before I moved so that is all set now. I ended up moving a few files at a time instead of moving all of them at once.  Thanks again for everyones suggestions and help. You guys make me feel like I made the right choice in selecting Unraid over other options because of all of your support.
