Drive spin up logic

Featured Replies

Just a quick question regarding drive spin up logic:

If my drives are all spun down, as soon as I browse a share that contains files on all my data drives, UNRAID will spin up all of my data drives which seems like a waste if I just want a file that is on one of the drives. So I am just wondering if this behavior is normal or not as I don't seem to remember it doing that before?

Many Thanks

Santan

Only way for unRAID to get a file listing inclusive of all the files on all the involved data drives is that it must read each of the directories involved.  That may involve spinning up all the drives.

The exception is if the data blocks holding the directory information for a given disk are already in the disk buffer cache memory.  If so, the request for the directory may be satisfied by the blocks in memory and a spin up of one or more of the drives may not be needed.

Isn't this also dependent on the inclusion/exclusion rules for a share?

Ok thanks for the explanation, it just seems crazy to have to spin up 6 drives just to get a word document... Out of curiosity would it help if I had more RAM (I currently have 1GB)?

If you install more ram and do the ls -R trick talked about in depth in other threads your drives will all spin up rarely
