User and Share Security, Logging onto to the GUI

Featured Replies

First-

I use Firefox for my internet browser. I normally log on to the GUI by entering my server name and hitting enter. That's it, no \\, no anything. Server name enter, and it works just fine.

Internet Explorer - I must enter the ip address. Entering the server name just gets me a Bing or Google search.  Entering \\server name gets me a file explorer window.

Why can't I just enter my server name in IE the same as Firefox?

Second-

Finally getting around to setting up users and shares, passwords, read only etc.

I set a password for root. I also added one user and assigned a password.

I then went to a share in file explorer and made it secure, then gave the one user read access. As I understand it this should bring up a username / password prompt so that the user can access the share. Further, it should only allow read access. It does the only allow read access part, but it does not ask for a username and password.

This results in ME not being able to write to the share. I get an error saying I need permission from wdisk/nobody (wdisk is my server name). But never does it prompt for a user name and password.

I'll end it here so as to not overload the kind helpers. Hopefully it will all fall into place with some answers to the above.

Try //tower

Set the share as Private to restrict read access.

//Tower for what? The name of my unraid server is wdisk. So to access from an explorer window I type \\wdisk.

I'm not understanding that first suggestion.

The second suggestion renders my shares inaccessible from the explorer window. Even my password and username don't work. root password.

//wdisk should bring up the management page and \\wdisk should show the shares.

The root password will never work for share access.

I understand now. Thank you, that worked. Wonder why Firefox doesn't require the //?  Speaking of Firefox, the server is not requiring prompting me to login. Do you know why that is?

It will prompt me if I enter the ip address, but not if I enter //wdisk as you suggested (works for IE, just not firefox).

RE: the shares. How would I access them if I don't create a user and set to private as you suggest? Is that possible?

I created a user, and set the flash drive to private. I can't log in using that info.

Is the share configure to allow the user? There is a line for each defined user. I think IE uses the system Credentials and Firefox has it's own storage for logins. Look in the Credentials control panel and/or Firefox preferences or settings.

The share is set to private and then below it set to my user being allowed to read/write. That results in a username password prompt, but the unraid username and password does not work.

The other thing I tried was setting the share to secure. This allows me to access the share, but I can't do anything but read. No writes. And no prompt for a password to enable write access.
