February 26, 201412 yr Hi, hopefully a simple question. If i'm streaming from the array does the parity drive spin up also or does just the one drive being accessed spin up on its own? Thinking of buying a NAS drive for parity disc only because it gets a bit more 'hammer' than the others which will most probably be the cheaper 4TB desktop drives. After all theyre idle most of the time and dont run 24x7.
February 26, 201412 yr When reading then only the data drive spins up. The parity drive is only needed if writing, or if a drive has failed and you are emulating the drive you are trying to read from.

So ... it makes no sense to go for nas rated drives which are at a considerable premium at the minute. Desktop 4TB's will do the job for a lot fewer £££s although i think i'll still go for the heavier duty nas drive for parity.
