parity check?

Featured Replies

Unraid is doing a parity check, and it seems it prevents to access my files

Is this normal?

Can I stop this parity check? I need to access some files....

This is what's happening exactly:

*) I couldn't access my shares, and since I was doing some changes on my network, I shutdown and restarted my server

*) I could access the webGUI (tower:8080) and noticed a parity check was in process

*) But after a few minutes, I couldn't access it anymore, nor my shares

Is this normal? Does the parity check prevent to access the webGUI????

No, that's not normal.    While a parity check will cause slower access to your data (since the disk heads will be doing a LOT of movement to access the file(s) you need), it should still work.

When you restarted the server, it apparently had not been properly shut down ... so it started an automatic parity check.    But that shouldn't cause any problem with either accessing the Web GUI or accessing your shares.

You can stop the parity check ... but if you can't access the Web GUI you can't do so "cleanly".    Press the power button briefly and see if the system does a clean shutdown.

If that works, you can restart it -- it will start another automated check; but hopefully you can then access the Web GUI and stop the check.  You should also be able to access your shares then as well.

If  you can telnet into the box, I would recommend saving a copy of your syslog (see the wiki for instructions). There may be hints inside as to what happened. I agree with Gary that this is not normal.

I did shutdown the server yesterday night (pressed the power button briefly) and started it again and I could access my shares. This morning, it says Parity OK, and everything looks good

Don't know what happened

Thanks...... :)

Assuming it wanted to run an automated parity check, it probably did that overnight.  What does the Web GUI show for the "Last check on ..." date?

If you are running an older version of UnRAID, with a very large number of transactions to replay, UnRAID would start the parity check which slows everything down (especially while replaying transactions), and would not have all of the drives fully mounted before the User Shares tried to setup.  Your syslog from that session will probably show that the User Shares could not be created yet, because the drives had not finished mounting.  Current UnRAID versions delay the automatic parity check to avoid that happening.

By the way, it's great to see you back posting again, Brian!  Missed you!  You've been such a valuable part of this community.
