March 18, 201412 yr Hello there, i need a workaround for this problem. I have a unraid Server wich has about 1TB of data stored right now. I want a backup wich stores the changed and deleted files. It is only used if some of my employes delete accidentally a file to recover it. Now im trying to do this job with Carbon Copy Cloner on a iMac connected via gigabit ethernet but it takes about 6 hours to backup (For 1TB of Data!!). (I backup on a USB3 4TB Harddrive). I think its because of the huge amount of files stored on the server. For example i have many websites stored on it with several thousands of files. I connect to the server via afp protocol on Mavericks. Is there a solution to connect the external USB3 drive directly to the server an let it do this kind of job? Or does that not give my speed advantages? Thanks to all for your upcoming answers! Greetings from Germany!
March 18, 201412 yr Will the plugin called SNAP work for you? It allows a USB drive to be attached directly to the array. That would allow transfers within the unRAID machine and not require the Mac in the middle. SNAP can be found in the FORUMS, and its part of the plugins for the DYNAMIX Web Gui and the CONTROL PANEL plugin manager.
March 19, 201412 yr Unfortunately as of the last I've seen here, usb 3.0 is a no go, it will only connect at 2.0 speeds, so you are going to be less than gigabit speeds anyway. Perhaps you should email Tom (main developer of limetech) and ask if he is planning on usb 3.0 support soon.
March 27, 201412 yr Author Thanks for your reply, is there a option to connect an internal drive and use it only for backing up? But for that, i need a script wich does that for me. But i thinks there is nothing existing around here
March 27, 201412 yr I wouldn't bother setting this up locally -- there's no significant speed advantage doing this locally on a USB3 drive vs. simply doing it over your Gb network, as you're doing now. There are two reasons it's taking the time you're seeing: (1) You've got a lot of data (1TB+) to backup. Even if this was just a few large files, it would still take ~ 3 hrs (2) I suspect you've got a LOT of files ... and writing up a lot of small files takes MUCH longer than writing a few large ones, as the directory information on removable media is updated after each file. Check the options you have set in your backup/cloning software -- most can be set to only copy the new files ... so this should be MUCH quicker after the first time, assuming not all of your data changes every day.
