March 31, 201412 yr I have just recently upgraded from 4.7 to 5.0.5. I don't know if my issue is related to the upgrade but I thought I would just throw that out there. I've noticed that the usb flash drive is constantly getting written to. It appears that the /boot/config/samba/wins.dat file is the culprit. The file is not getting appended with any data but it is getting written quite often (every minute or so). 1. Is this normal? 2. If not, does anyone have any insight to why this could be happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
March 31, 201412 yr On checking my USB stick, that file does not exist. It sounds as though there is something defined in your system that results in its presence?
March 31, 201412 yr On checking my USB stick, that file does not exist. It sounds as though there is something defined in your system that results in its presence? I don't have that file either. Maybe it has something to do with Windows mapping a network drive? I never map any network drives and don't ever seem to need to for any reason. Just specifying a UNC path always seems to work for any applications I use or to browse.

March 31, 201412 yr I bet that's it. Google search for Active Directory wins.dat has some results about /var/cache/samba/wins.dat I have /var/cache/samba folder, but there is no wins.dat in it. Seems like that is where it should be instead of on /boot. No experience with this so no advice. Maybe someone else will come along.
March 31, 201412 yr Author I appreciate all the replies. As a side note, I'm not utilizing active directory with samba. It appears that I may have stopped the bleeding though. The /etc/samba/smb.conf file was referencing another config file (/boot/config/smb-extra.conf). This config file was setting the state directory for samba as /boot/config/samba. I simply renamed the smb-extra-conf file and restarted samba. Whether this was the correct solution I don't know but it appears to have remedied the constant writing to the flash drive. I will continue to search the net for other possible solutions. Again, I appreciate everyone's response and time to the issue.
