Upgrade chassis to hotswappable drives

Featured Replies

I built my server "Only" three years ago and have outgrown the space within my chassis.  I'd like to have a minimum of 10 hot swappable 3.5 bays, but if the cost isn't too high I'd be okay with up to 24.  I don't care if it's a tower or rack mountable server case, just as long the bays are accessible from the front.  I've seen the D-316M case lime-tech offers with 10 3.5 bays and four 2.5 bays and that would fulfill my current needs, but also trying to see if there is something I could build for less money and more 3.5" bays.  It'll be sitting with all my Home Theatre equipment so noise is a concern, but I'm not expecting it to be super quiet.

I'm planning on upgrading my hardware once 6.0 is finalized so I can virtualize XBMC, but since I haven't changed my hardware since 4.7 wondering if there are any hardware upgrades I should do short term.  I would like to keep the case I upgrade to for my eventual hardware refresh.

I use my server only on my local network for backups, music/video streaming (Blu-Ray ISOs) and XBMC cataloging.  No plugins other than XBMC

Here's my current build:

I would go with a NORCO RPC-4224 if you have room.  Keep an eye on them as both it and the 20 port version get discount codes every so often on new egg.  You might want to sign up for their email offers and then visit the server page several times.  It seems like I get special offers after I visit various items on the egg.  Nope, no user tracking there. ;D ;D ;D

And this one has 12, just depends on what you want:

What size hdds do you have? You said you outgrew your space, maybe its better for you to upgrade to all 4TB hdds first if you haven't already?

Anyway, if you are buying a case for something like 10 slots for hdds, and you can fit a rackmount case, I think its the way to go.
