plus vs pro and a side question about Virtualbox

Featured Replies

Hi,  I only have 6-7 drives in my 2 systems,  one is an existing server 2012 that I use for AD and a file server.  my plan was to get the Unraid server up and running (zPrimary) with 4x3tb drives, and one 500gb cache then use virtualbox to run a server 2012 r2 AD controller on it,  P2V my old server 2012, remove one of the 3tb drives and move it to zprimary, install unraid (zbackup) for the 6 2tb drives in that server,  add another 500gb cache drive and use virtual box to load and run the P2V'd 2012 AD. zbackup will mostly duplicate data from zprimary.

I also plan on running Crashplan to back up important files on the interwebz.

My main concern is with these setups, is it worth it to get the Pro license for AD integration?  from what I read AD does not work all that well on Unraid,  I don't mind using the security found in Plus unless the AD is set it and forget it and simple on the Pro version.

Any tips?

Also how complicated is the virtual box plugin?  I have installed it but not tried it yet.  that is my next step before buying a license.

Run version 6. It supports VMs by default and several VM images are available.

Running unRAID as DOM0 is the default configuration and requires no special hardware. Guest VMs can run without special hardware if the guests do not require direct hardware access. Plex, torrent, usenet, sab, dlna, etc., do not require direct hardware access and will run in a guest VM on a system with no special hardware. VMs. for XBMC, Windows, a second unRAID instance, etc., do require some level of direct hardware access and there are at least 2 hardware varieties that allow varying levels of direct hardware access for VMs.

Mosts users can run stock unRAID in DOM0 and put add-ons in 1 or more VMs without regard to hardware.

is version 6 good enough to run for in a live home environment as it is?

I'm going to try it.  Have been running 6B3 without virtualization since it came out on production server.  But am trying to setup WHS2011 VM for backups.  Just haven't had enough time to setup WHS2011 completely with passed through controller for HDD's yet.  May switch and just pass through Hard Drives directly.  I did get pass through working with the extra nic on my X7SBE MB.
