4.3.3 works fine (weeks), update to 4.4.2, hangs on loading bzroot.

Gets through 8 lines of "..." and hangs.

Not sure a log would help since the system hasn't booted at this point. Never makes it to "Ready."

Restored old bzroot/bzimage (glad I thought to keep copies) and it boots fine.

Can't guarantee that this is the problem, but try the tips on the USB Flash Drive Preparation wiki page, especially the one about fifth from the bottom, about needing to use a newer syslinux after upgrading unRAID.  There is an even newer version at the syslinux site.  Download site shows version 3.73 just released.  Grab the syslinux-#.##.zip file, and extract syslinux.exe from the win32 folder, if you will use it on a Windows machine.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Originally had a hard time getting this drive bootable and had to use the HP tool. Dunno where I put that, but I don't want to mess it up by redoing syslinux.

i have not been able to upgrade to anything past 4.3.3 either.  It seems to get further than bzroot as yours does though,  mine hangs at either the part where unraid is scanning the discs, or just after it - maybe when it initilizes the nic.    I have a feeling it has nothing to do with unraid as no one else is reporting this.

Is there any way to install to flash brand new but retain settings like all the user shares?

Those setting are found in the config folder on your flash when you plug it into a windows machine... After you have these backed up....

delete all the files on the flash(you should NOT need to reformat)

run syslinux.exe as stated by RobJ

unzip the unraid version you wish to use on the flash drive

overwrite the config folder on your flash with the one saved to your windows machine...

done, should be ready to go...

Cheers,

Matt

I finally got around to working on this and it still did not boot.  Could I install fresh and re-create the shares without losing data?

There should not be a problem.. in fact you may find that the shares are automatically created for you, you will just have to re-set the settings for each.  Although I cannot imagine that your backed-up config folder could be causing a problem in the boot sequence so early.

It sounds to me like a syslinux problem as RobJ mentioned above.  Make sure you are using the newest version.. or try a few different ones to see if one will work.  Also make sure that you test the md5 of the bzroot and bzimage files to make sure that you don't have corrupt files (i'm pretty sure the details are in the wiki).

We only have the md5 for the downloaded installation files, found here:  Release Notes, MD5SUMs section.
