May 15, 201412 yr Hi all, So my flash boot drive crapped out on me over this past weekend. I'm pretty sure all my drives are fine and data is intact. So I'm taking this opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of Unraid but I'm concerned about my data and the new USB stick. I thought I remembered when I first got my server up and running, something about when you assign the disks again Unraid automatically formats each drive and you loss any data on them. IS this a concern? Are there any other issues I may not be aware of? Thanks for any feedback. Cheers!
May 15, 201412 yr As long as you don't assign any drive to the parity slot, nothing will get overwritten. Assuming you got a new license key file from Tom for the new stick already, I'd just assign all the drives to data slots, start the array and browse the disk shares, and as long as only one drive shows unformatted, you are fine. Set a new config, and assign the single unformatted drive to the parity slot, and your cache drive to the cache slot, select the "parity is already valid" option, and start the array. I'd do a non-correcting parity check just to be sure everything is ok. If you have 0 errors, then you are done. If you have a recent list of which drives go in which slots, then you can just assign them all correctly, check the parity is valid box, run a non-correcting check, and go about your business. All this assumes you were at least running 4.7 successfully before the crash, if you were on an earlier version, you may have issues. In any case, if you show more than one drive unformatted, collect a syslog and post it in the general section and ask for help before proceeding any further.
May 16, 201412 yr Author I believe I was running 5.0 and upgrading to 5.05. Still no word from Tom though, I'd like to get this thing back up and running.
May 16, 201412 yr You may wish to re-post in a support forum as the lounge is not high on the support team's reading list. I tried to get a moderator to move this post, but no response from them either yet. You are correct, unRAID formats new drives when added to an array. You should be able to create a new USB boot drive, and confirm the unRAID recognizes your drives PRIOR to starting the array. If unRAID does not recognize the drives as Parity and Data, do not start the array. Post details and a syslog in the support forum. In a typical upgrade, files are retained from version to version. May 16, 201412 yr Author Thank you very much, I'll go ahead and re-post over there. I did see that upgrade page I just want to cover my bases. I appreciate it.
