Steam In Home Streaming from unRAID XEN

Featured Replies

Right so tonight I tried Steams In Home streaming feature and it works well from my main PC to my Intel NUC. Very impressive!

Can someone with a GPU passed through to one of the VMs test and see if this works for them?

I have a Xeon E1230v3 on my SuperMicro X10SL7-F and, if the above works and performance is decent, I think i'll just need a GPU and i will have living room bliss!

If this can be done with SteamOS, oh my...

NVidia vs AMD?

Yes it does. Very well and is a glorious example of the tech.

Windows VM with a vnc client installed and an app to force the resolution you want as auto detect won't work unless you have a monitor connected.

And you want AMD unless you like flashing GPU BIOS. I have a 7970 that works very well for 1080p.

I didn't try a dummy plug as tbh, 99% of the time the GPU was connected to my AVR so as to feign a 1080p monitor. Looks like a neat solution though.

No, I haven't tried SteamOS at all yet. I don't see the point really as most of the games anyone would want to play are sadly still DirectX / Windows based. That is only going to improve but for now, the back catalog means I'm sticking with Windoze for a gaming OS. Steam big picture mode does a quite nice job of making it couch / xbox 360 controller friendly if you pair it with an auto hotkey launcher listening for controller events (ie to launch Steam). Or, the more low tech option is to install a VNC server on the Windows machine and just use a VNC viewer from your phone to click the steam icon.

I give it exactly 10 days before you break and buy a new mobo!

I'll probably go down the dummy plug route.

Sadly, i'm in the process of upgrading all my drives to 4TB, so that will be the priority for now. 4 more to go!

It would be good to see if there is a motherboard out there that will handle Xeon, IPMI, dual network ports, PCIE... Back to the research!

Supermicro X10SAT

You sure that has IPMI?  This SuperMicro link http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C220/X10SAT.cfm doesn't mention it even though Newegg does.  I don't necessarily trust the descriptions on Newegg.  I have tried to correct Newegg before and it did get corrected but I don't know if it was my complaint or just and update from manufacturer.

It has vpro. Which is the same difference

Your right they do mention that but they sure didn't make it stand out.

Supermicro X10SAT

Sorry for the offtopic but did supermicro fix the passthrough issue you had?

I returned the board in the end. They did however indicate in another thread to jack0w (I think that's his username) that they've completed the fix with Intel.

Only one way to find out... BTW the issue with passthrough was no HDMI audio on host. So if that isn't a biggie for you go nuts.

Could you link me to the topic where you documented the issues you had with the X10SAT? I tried searching but I couldn't find it

Wait, vPro has IPMI/KVM? I am such a loser, didn't research that beforehand... Does it work well?!

What mobo did you settle for in the end, still SuperMicro?

vPro IS IPMI / KVM just in another implementation!!

badger: i'm an idiot, it's ok!

Yeah, we should find the ultimate motherboard for Xen + unRAID + GPU passthrough...

Hey all!  Just thought I'd mention that I tried this out (not with unRAID, but just in general).  I'm a huge fan of Valve and this latest feature is just awesome.  I see a lot of potential for this with unRAID in future releases.  Keep experimenting and sharing your feedback. Your interests both validate and fuel our direction and focus!!

I think that ultimate motherboard is the X10SAT - now if only one would magically appear in my house again so I could test it... !

I'm not so sure because if you put a x16 card in, the rest are disabled, and the other slots are only x1..
