Listings from drive?

Featured Replies

Well ... i've managed to fill up 4 x 4TB drives to the brim and quite easy it was too  :D

I 've checksumm'ed everything at both folder and disk root levels and now need a simple way to extract an overall listing of what's on the drive, ideally a Win32 application that I can run against each disk and then store away until that time of inevitable data loss arrives. Hopefully i will be prepared  ;)

Can anyone recommend such a tool?

I use the excellent Directory Printer from Glenn Alcott:  http://www.galcott.com/dp.htm

The free Directory Printer from Karenware should work as well:  http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp

(although I'm not sure it has the same "level control" that the Glenn Alcott utility does, which is VERY convenient)

In either case, you can "print" the directory listing to a PDF file using the free CutePDF utility, which creates a "printer" that you simply choose to print the listing to.

http://cutepdf.com/

In other words:  (1)  Install CutePDF;  and then (2)  "Print" a directory listing of the disk(s) using one of the directory printer utilities I noted above, choosing the CutePDF printer -- you'll be prompted for the location and name for your PDF file output [i keep a folder called "UnRAID Disks"].

... Note, by the way, that while it's good to have checksums and a listing of all the files; this is NOT a replacement for having your data backed up.

With checksums and directory listings, all you can do is identify WHAT you've lost if you encounter a data-loss situation => but you won't be able to restore that lost data unless it's backed up.

Garycase ... appreciated.

Yes ... i fully recognise that backup is a must. That's why i have media, media folders at rar/par2 level and a separate copy offline. All checksummed awaiting future failure  ;)

Now that I am able to list the contents of each ... i'm sorted, i think :D

Oh .... UPS still needed, must sort this asap.

And then move on to virtualisation.

Hi Super

To create a listing of what is on my drive I use Directory Report

http://www.file-utilities.com

It can also report the file's checksum (CRC32)
