June 30, 201412 yr Ok.. this may be a strange one. I purchased a used Super Micro 933. It appears the diskcontroller it came with does not support JBOD mode so UNRAID won't work. So I need a new controller. No problem. The problem is there is a pair of Mini-SAS SFF-8087 forward breakout cables fixed to the disk drive end of the case. The replacement card I want (the only PCI-X cards I can find) require straight SATA connections. The question is, can I make the new card work without trying to remove the Mini-SAS SFF-8087 cable? Can I connect another cable to the Mini-SAS SFF-8087 which will allow me to connect it to the new controller card? Thanks in advance.
June 30, 201412 yr I wonder if theres a mini-8087 to mini-8087 joiner (female - female), that you could plug the sata ports into via a reverse breakout cable, and then to your fixed mini8087 backplane connection be a bit of a cabling mess, even if such a thing exists (quick google didnt turn up anything) shame you cant find a pcix card with 8087 ports - Ive no experience with them though
June 30, 201412 yr Author I wonder if theres a mini-8087 to mini-8087 joiner (female - female), that you could plug the sata ports into via a reverse breakout cable, and then to your fixed mini8087 backplane connection Thats the first thing I looked for. The best I found were forward and reverse cables, which I do not believe will do the job.
June 30, 201412 yr Theres this: http://www.elpeus.com/mini-sas-products/mini-sas-adapter-adapter-cables/6-mini-sas-female-sff-8087-to-sff-8087-internal-bridge-cable/ but pricey, and doesnt avoid a cabling mess /edit another, neater one: http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sas_cables_adapters/sff-8087-female-gender-changer.asp
June 30, 201412 yr If the card you are wanting to come from is the AOC-SAT2-MV8 and it goes to a back plane in your case that has a SFF-8087 socket on it? Then you will be wanting reverse break out cables to go from the AOC-SAT2-MV8 to the SFF-8087 socket on the back plane. So something like this I think http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400143&cm_re=SATA_to_SFF-8087-_-12-400-143-_-Product Assuming my piecing together of two posts and assumption that your case had a back plane with a SFF-8087 socket.
June 30, 201412 yr Author OK. Nevermind. Problem solved. The current cables were "attached" with some kind of rubber that was easy to remove. I can now use the cards I want with the cables I already have available. Thanks!
