July 1, 201412 yr I am wanting to upgrade to the latest stable version to keep somewhat current for support, etc. I have a a Plus license running 5.5-RC5-R8168 and would like to go to 5.0.5. From the support site, here is what I found I need to do, but have a few questions in-line... Only upgrade a server that has all disks enabled with valid parity: no missing disk(s), no disabled disk, etc. Verify everything is working correctly with your current release before proceeding. Done - Ran a full parity check with no errors Backup the entire contents of your Flash device before upgrading. If something goes wrong or a major issue is uncovered in the release having to do with your hardware, this will make it easier for you to downgrade. Done Record the model, serial number, and position of each of your hard disks. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is take a screen capture of the Disk Status or Main page. Done Disable or un-install all non-stock unRAID add-ons. Only use add-ons that have been verified by the add-on author to work properly with unRAID OS version 5. Not sure on this one. I added a couple of things when I first installed (like a shutdown script, etc.) but not sure what, if anything, I need to remove. Prepare the flash: either shutdown your server and plug the flash into your PC or Stop the array and perform the following actions referencing the flash share on your network: Copy the files bzimage and bzroot from the zip file to the root of your flash device, overwriting the same-named files already there. Seems pretty straight forward, will do this when I start the upgrade. Reboot your server. Once boot-up has completed, you should see "Stopped. Configuration valid." array status with all disks assigned correctly. Click on each disk link on the Main page and examine the Partition format field. If you see "MBR: error", or "MBR: unknown" for any disk, do not Start the array; instead post your finding in the Forum announcement thread for this release. If everything looks ok, click Start to bring the array on-line. This one scares me a bit... is there a potential for big issues here? Go to Utils/New Permissions and execute that utility to change file ownership and permission settings. This is necessary for proper operation of the 5.0 security model. Any potential problems here? Is this all there is to it? Anything else I should look out for? Thanks in advance... Phillip

I added a couple of things when I first installed (like a shutdown script, etc.) but not sure what, if anything, I need to remove. There are some things like SimpleFeatures that does not work under 5.0 properly, which this is specifically targeting. Also, if you use SAB/SB/CP or any other common plugins you are likely using Influencers. He is not maintaining plugins anymore and PhAzE has built all new plugins for just about everything you can think of. Ideally the suggestion would be to boot up with a virgin 5.0.5 install and make sure everything is behaving as expected, and then go about installing plugins (updating where necessary). No, not really. If you've been stable on RC5 you should likely experience no issues, but this is just having you make 100% sure before you start the array back up. Go to Utils/New Permissions and execute that utility to change file ownership and permission settings. This is necessary for proper operation of the 5.0 security model. Any potential problems here? Nope, should be very straight forward and shouldn't cause you any issues at all. Is this all there is to it? Anything else I should look out for? Nope. It should be very straight forward. The largest potential hiccup is the plugins, but as I mentioned if you document what plugins you have now, and install the newest builds once you've upgraded you should be fine. Most of the plugins (i.e. PhAzE's replacements for Influencer) should find the same config directory and should install/start without issues, but you are likely moving 8-12 months from RC5 to where we are today, so doing a plugin spring cleaning is a good idea. If you do want a replacement for SimpleFeatures then look at Dynamix. Good luck.
July 2, 201412 yr Author Oh, and one more question... I am using unmenu (get to it by going to unraid:8080 on my network) for some management tasks. Is that considered a plugin? Thanks...

Again, I would use the stock GUI to make sure everything looks good, and then add unmenu and everything else (unmenu likely has updates from your version as well).
