August 10, 201411 yr Hi, I am currently in the process of upgrading my current setup (HP ProLiant Microserver with unRAID and QNAP NAS for applications) into a single new unRAID server which will also host the applications I need (Sickbeard, Sabnzbd,...) as Docker containers. Hardware is almost decided, I am unsure about the best update process though. To be able to use Docker I will need to upgrade unRAID to the version 6 betas (I am currently running stable) and add a cache drive. Would you rather upgrade unRAID first and then move to the new hardware? Or move the existing stable version to the new hardware first? Also I am still deciding whether to get an HDD or an SSD for the cache drive (currently leaning towards a WD Blue drive), since read/write performance should be more than enough for my setup. Would you recommend rather getting an SSD?
August 10, 201411 yr Since unRAID 5 and above will remember your drive assignments, it shouldn't matter whether you change the hardware first or change the OS first. If you are still waiting on hardware delivery then you could go ahead and start on the OS upgrade, but you won't be able to get docker going until you get a drive that you can put btrfs on. You could even use the 64bit plugins by PhAzE until you can get ready for docker. If you had the hardware already, I would probably do the hardware first just to get it out of the way and stable, since that should be a relatively straight-forward process. Then you could turn your attention to learning about the new unRAID capabilities. Both either way should work fine. Many are running their dockers on cache SSDs, and I know some are running their dockers on an SSD separate from cache and using a spinner for their cache duty. I don't really use the cache drive to cache writes, so I am doing an SSD cache for my apps.
