[Solved] Accessing single disks with array offline

Featured Replies

I'm planning to move some drives from one array to another.  I know there is some risk of data loss with this, but my parity check went well and there have been no SMART errors so I'm going to risk it.  Thing is, if I pull out half the drives from my existing unRAID array, I obviously won't be able to start it after I boot up.  Apologies if this is a dumb question, but can I mount the remaining drives individually and access the data across the LAN?

You are creating a second array? Not clear what you are asking but maybe this helps.

If you remove array disks your parity protection on the remaining disks is lost. You'd need to do a new config on the original array and rebuild parity.

The removed disks are RFS formatted disks and can be loaded into another unRaid server. You can also load them into a Windows box with a special driver (gives read only access only).

Yes, that was a bit unclear on my part.  From the unRAID perspective I'm removing them from the server and installing them in a different computer.  For the remaining drives, if I boot unRAID it will tell me that I can't start the array, which is ok, but can I somehow make those disks accessible over the LAN?

Perhaps if I booted the box with a trial version of unRAID it could read the disks and share them somehow.  (Would prefer not to go the Windows route but that's a good suggestion.)

Just do as bjp999 noted =>  Do a "New Config" (on the Utils tab) and assign the drives you still have to the array.  Be CERTAIN you assign the correct parity drive (or just don't assign a parity drive initially).

Then you can access the remaining disks normally.

If you're moving your UnRAID key to the "other" box where you're moving drives to, then you can do the same thing as above, but with only 2 data disks at a time - just create a new Basic UnRAID USB key (free version) and assign any two data drives to it (parity not necessary).    Then you can access that data across your network;  and when you're ready to access a different set of disks, just do a New Config and change the drives you've assigned to it.

That sounds clear enough - thanks to you both for your help!
