Copy files over SMB, midnight commander gives error

Featured Replies

Sorry if this isn't eaxctly pertinent to unRaid but I have a query about file transfer over SMB

I want an easy way to copy stuff between portable hard drives and my unraid server. With ntfs drives even over a wired network i get 5-6 MBps which is pathetic and impractical. More than the transfer speed, I dont want to have a pc or media center running till the time the transfer takes place. I don't want to SNAP every time i have to use a new drive. That's too long a procedure for just copying. And anyway I have had no luck getting SNAP working on v6.

I have a router with a USB port and I tried hooking my portable disk to the router and started up midnight commander. I entered the smb link in the right window and entered the IP address and it showed me my disk. I can browse into the folder on the hard drive but when I try to copy something from the array onto it it gives an error saying it cannot write to the disk. Tried another disk and same story. How to fix this? And is there some other easier or faster way to copy that I am missing? Really the one thing I do not like about unraid is the lack of an option to just hook up a usb or sata drive to the array and merely transfer files.

I do this all the time.  If you are copying from a console/telnet session the only thing you have to know is the format of the mount/umount commands used to make the drive visible.  You can then use either simple cp commands, or mc to get the files onto the disk.  This type of copy will run at the speed of the USB drive that you have just plugged in - which if it is USB 3 is very fast (50+MBps).  You can also use SATA drives as long as your hardware supports hot-swap of SATA drives.

If you want to use NTFS format drives then you will probably want the ntfs-3g package. This is needed for handling drives that are larger than 2TB, and I think it may also be required for writing to NTFS drives.  This package can be installed by simply dropping it into the 'extra' folder on the flash drive (create it if not already present).

Oh ok! So I'm probably missing the ntfs package because of which midnight commander might be giving an error. Let me try that. Thanks a ton.
