September 27, 201411 yr Hello everybody, Let me first start by saying that I am completely new to this and it has been sometime since I originally set up my unraid box. For the past 1.5 years I have zero issues running 5.0.4 except once when I had a bad drive but the replacement of that went rather easy and I was to seamlessly save my 16 gb of data. So recently I had a power outage, then I noticed that my flash drive on my unraid box what the only folder available in finder and windows explorer when I opened the drive. I quickly hooked up my unraid box to a monitor and keyboard when I discovered that my telenet sessions were not working from multiple computers on my network. my initial plan was to go to the wiki and create a log file to post here but after I boot and login I typed in: cp/var/log/syslog/boot....I get an message saying that it cant find that directory. Again I tried cp/var/log/syslog/boot/syslog.txt.......same error saying that it can't find the path or file. Things that I currently know: --from the clicking inside the case when I boot....I know that I have lost a drive. My original hope was to get to the "\\tower" main gui page I could review statistics as I had before when I lost a drive and replace....however, I am flying blind here. --Yes I have unmenu installed on my system, but the \\tower:8080 doesn't work --I have tried to type the IP address into multiple viewers and yet....I get a time out message --Can't telnet into it with putty --no luck telneting into it with OSX --Oddly enough I can access the flash drive over the network as the "tower" server shows up in exploerer under networks and inside finder. Strange. I have looked at a lot of posts on this site but others either had some of my issues and were able to access their system in different ways (telnet. typing the IP into a browser or file explorer) or had none of my issues I describe here. I need a little help....even if you could help me get log file out that would be a great start. I am worried that I have lost everything. Anything you could do to suggest or help me troubleshoot would be much appreciated. Regards,
September 27, 201411 yr I am not sure how many data drives you have, but you could try a virgin install of UnRAID. I don't think you can get 5.0.4, but you can download 5.0.5 and as long as you know what your parity drive is/was then you should be able to mount the array and figure things out. First, do a complete backup of your USB key. Second, reformat the key, and copy over the 5.0.5 files Third, from the config directory copy over the super.dat which is the file parity uses to understand the state of your drives, and uses to rebuild a failed drive. You can also copy over the following from the config folder: ident.cfg (provides computer hostname) network.cfg (provides IP address info) Pro.key or Plus.key (assuming you bought a license) share.cfg and the shares folder With these files you should boot up with the same config you had before (minus unmenu or plugins) and the array should start (assuming you only have one bad drive). You should then be able to access the GUI and see what is going on. Hopefully from this point you can identify what drive has gone bad and then work on rebuilding it. Alternatively, you COULD just try and copy over the 5.0.5 files over your existing drive after a full backup, and it may boot up properly, but the above approach gives you a clean, virgin UnRAID install to work from without having to worry about any plugins or anything else that could be mucking things up.
September 27, 201411 yr The command "cp/var/log/syslog/boot/syslog.txt" is incorrect. The correct command is cp /var/log/syslog/boot/syslog.txt
September 30, 201411 yr Author Hello all, I want to thank you for all of your help. I tried what bkastner suggested, however, now I am having difficulty in getting my motherboard to boot from the usb key. This was a pain when I initailly setup. I am using a Asus Z87 - k motherboard. The bios seems pretty straight forward but for some reason I can't even get the motherboard to boot to usb. The Bios clearly sees the brand of usb key and size. Anybody run into this issue with thier motherboard? Can anybody else suggest a means of possibly getting this to boot? Is there something that I am missing? Could you share your solutions with me....I may be missing something in the settings but I didn't change anything from the original set up. I have tried different USB keys.....the same port it was originally placed in....and yet I met with frustration. Please help. Regards
October 1, 201411 yr The suggestion is more of an outline. See the readme file in the unRAID package for complete instruction on preparing a new flash drive. Read to instructions completely and follow them carefully.
