Don't know what I'm doing but Have Plex Server Docker running

Featured Replies

So,  After trying to figure out what to do to get docker running on 6b10 and failing I just decided to wing it.

I went into the docker tab.  First I found a repository from a thread here, so I added it to the config and clicked save

https://github.com/gfjardim/docker-containers/tree/templates

Then I set a location (outside array app drive formatted as xfs) created a Docker folder, and /mnt/my/location/Docker/docker.img

4gb default image

Clicked start.

From the docker page I clicked add container, selected Plex Media Server, then pointed config to the same disk (not my real plex config location since I'm just playing) and clicked apply.

A new window popped up and installed/started plex.

I couldn't get to the webgui because my other plex server (plex plugin) was running. So I stopped it and then I can magically get to my new plex container.

Once my other plex server was stopped I could see the new one:

I tried clicking advanced and changing the port that this Plex runs on (I guess I could do that through the gui now)  but the original attempt under advanced didn't work.

I've got a million quesitons.  First, did I do this right?  I mean it seemed to work but it was a total guess.

Can I point /config to my actual library and will it just pick up my existing Plex library.

Other than pulling Plex out of unraid, is there any advantages (performance/stability) to keeping with the container vs the plugin.  That is of course other than it being the new cool thing to do :-)

Hello Dmtalon,

Yes it looks like you setup everything very well. That image file you created "4gb" actually has it's own btrfs file system inside it. Every time you create a new docker it gets mounted inside that image file. It will be helpful to know that at this time the file can only grow in size but not shrink, so choosing 4gb wasn't a bad idea, I choose 10. This is a bit of a change from previous versions of unraid docker like beta 6, as on those versions it was required to have the file system you kept your dockers on in btrfs, I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong here, but the I think after the switch to the image file it no longer matters the base file system of the storage drive. Which is why you were able to do it on xfs.

As for your other questions,

Changing the port:

there are two connection types "bridge" and "host" I don't know exactly what the differences between them are right now, but some Dockers require "host" like plex media server. For on these you cannot change the port.

For dockers that use "bridge", you can change the port, you set the container port to what the default of the program is, and then set the host field to be any port you want.

Can you set the config path to your old plex library?

You can do this and it should work, it depends on what plugin you were using, in the old plugin I had I mapped the /config to /mnt/cache/Apps/Plex/Data

Now my folder maps are:

/config to /mnt/cache/Apps/Plex/config

/Media to /mnt/usr/Media

Advantages to performance and stability?

A resounding YES! Docker has made my unraid experience shoot through the roof in terms of stability. As you may be aware the more add-ons you apply the dicer things get. With docker all those concerns go away, as if something fails it is contained, the only caveat to this is if a process fails in such away that it tags out your systems resources.

Hope that helps, I think you will enjoy docker, and have fun while doing so!

Thanks for the reply.

I'm actually going to try to write a post on exactly what I did including getting plex working.  I had to do a little trial and error moving from the plug-in to docker to get my library right.  I first made a copy of my Library and then played with that..

But, in the end right now my plex container is up and usable (albiet on my test Library).  but until I add something new they're the same.
