WD Drives

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any luck or seen a better performance increase with any of the following drives?

What about the following?

WD Purple 4TB

WD SE 4TB

WD RE 4TB

In for Video / NAS

I use 2 of the WD 4TB Purple in my NVR, it has to capture 11 cams of 5MP with high frame rates.  The onboard cache is optimised for write-through, i.e. high speed video capture.  They aren't really appropriate for unRAD though they will probably work.

I too had been looking at purple drives, meant for 24/7 use and all plus using less than the normal cams amount dont see why bw would be an issue

Hi there demonmaestro!

I saw this topic and decided to help by telling a little bit about the drives in your post.

The WD Purple is meant for video surveillence purposes in particular and I wouldn't recommended you to use it in a NAS environments. They should work just fine if used like this, but the other two drives you've mentioned would suit better.

The WD Se drive is designed for cloud storage and NAS backup/archiving. They're one of the enterprise SATA drives with URE 10^15 rates and 7,200 RPM spindle speeds, have dual processors and a 64MB cache. Most importantly, SE drives have ERC/TLER enabled and are ideal for enterprise RAID arrays both mirrored and parity.

Lastly the WD Re - they're from the enterprice line as well and was created for high end standard enterprise SATA drives with most specifications being identical to the SE drives, but with the even better URE 10^16 rate. And so since it is NAS drives that you're looking for, I would recommend this drive.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)
