[SOLVED] Slow Read/Write Speed after upgrade to beta12

Recommended Posts

Alright..  I'm only getting 5-7 MB/s transfer speed instead of my usual 30-40 ish MB/s write to cache and 40-50ish MB's read to and from my unRAID box after upgrading to beta12 from beta 10a.

These are the steps I've taken to diagnose the issue so far.

I've checked to make sure nothing changed on the onboard NIC.  It hasn't.

I replaced the network cable and tested speeds with 4 different, brand new, cat 6 cables. No change.  I've tried connecting the unRAID box directly to my n66u GB router, and also through a GB switch.  No change in speed.

I tested disk Read speed.

/dev/sda:

Timing cached reads:  12622 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6318.71 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads:  60 MB in  3.00 seconds =  20.00 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:

Timing cached reads:  13836 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6926.65 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 366 MB in  3.00 seconds = 121.91 MB/sec

/dev/sdc:

Timing cached reads:  13838 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6927.92 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 354 MB in  3.01 seconds = 117.58 MB/sec

/dev/sdd:

Timing cached reads:  13556 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6786.11 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 440 MB in  3.01 seconds = 146.09 MB/sec

/dev/sde:

Timing cached reads:  13794 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6905.92 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 340 MB in  3.00 seconds = 113.30 MB/sec

/dev/sdf:

Timing cached reads:  13768 MB in  2.00 seconds = 6892.62 MB/sec

Timing buffered disk reads: 384 MB in  3.00 seconds = 127.92 MB/sec

It all looks fine.

I've also transferred files on my network to and from different PC's to eliminate an issue with my router or switch.  I'm getting 50+ MB/s when transferring large files between wired computers (1.5GB files).  So the issue is definitely not my network.

I've removed all my plugins and gone to stock, including setting go file to stock.  Still no change in transfer speed.  I'm still getting between 5 and 7 MB/s to/from my unRAID box.

I've attached dmesg output and the syslog.

At this point I'm tempted to try a new NIC.

Anything that I'm missing?

I'd done testing to/from the 'download' share I use to copy files to my array (cache drive since I use a cache drive), and from dish shares to PC's.  I hadn't done any copies to/from the disks themselves.  This is where I was getting 5-7MB/s

I just ran tests to disks 1-5 and again to/from the cache drive.

Copy to/from PC & disks 1-5 - 52MB/s

Copy to/from PC & cache drive - 53MB/s

I also tried copying to/from my shares (cache drive) again, and now I'm getting 52MB/s.

Nothing has changed in the 48 mins since I disabled plugins/unmenu & rebooted the server and in the 35 mins since I last ran the tests where I was still getting the slow transfer speed.

I'm at a loss.

I'm going to run more transfers and see what happens, and start re-enabling plugins to see if that was the issue or not.

Edit: still getting mixed transfer rates.  Putting together a test list.

Read/Write speed tests:

PC1 to \\tower\downloads - 55MB/s

PC1 to \\tower\cache\downloads - 56MB/s

PC1 to \\tower\disk1\ - 50MB/s

PC1 to \\tower\disk2 - 55MB/s

PC1 to \\tower\disk3 - 55MB/s

PC1 to \\tower\disk4 - 55MB/s

\\tower\cache\downloads to PC1 - 5.3MB/s

\\tower\downloads to PC1 - 5.3MB/s

\\tower\disk1 to PC1 - 5.8MB/s

\\tower\disk2 to PC1 - 6.1MB/s

\\tower\disk3 to PC1 - 6MB/s

\\tower\disk4 to PC1 - 6.8MB/s

PC2 to \\tower\downloads - 53 MB/s

PC2 to \\tower\cache\downloads - 58MB/s

PC2 to \\tower\disk1\ - 58MB/s

\\tower\downloads to PC2 - 6.8MB/s

\\tower\cache\downloads to PC2 - 6.8MB/s

\\tower\disk1 to PC2 - 6.3MB/s

Transfer speeds off of the array/individual disks are dead slow.  Transfer TO the array/individual disks are fine.

This is an improvement from earlier when I was seeing 6MB/s to and from.

EDIT:  I'm thinking NIC or software still.  Maybe an SMB issue.

Will try a new NIC first to eliminate physical issues, then try backtracking to beta 10a if the NIC isn't the issue.

NIC issue.

Put a new GB NIC in, disabled the onboard in the BIOS.  Voila!

Speeds of 40-60 MB/s in/out.

Hi! Would you mind sharing what NIC you bought and/or recommending one? I am having slow speeds as well, and have an Intel I218-V on my PC but a realtek chip on y unraid box. Gb switch between thme (Netgear SF108E)  Tried changing MTU but the realtek only does 4k and still not noticed any change anyway. My issue is on writing TO the array. Reading used to be fine.

Thanks.
