January 29, 201511 yr There aren't really very many PCI SATA controller cards listed as working ootb, that are available. I was looking for a 4 port SATA controller, PCI 2.0 x4, and I cam across this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7840675&CatId=5507 It's not listed as accepted hardware, but it does have the same chipset (Marvell 88SE9230) as the Digitus DS-30104-1 listed as "working". Anyone have any ideas?
January 30, 201511 yr No, too expensive for just 4 ports imho. I'm not from the US, maybe someone else has an alternative. Edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124056 Should work, although the wiki is questioning the support of large drives. I read through the ratings and it seems a guy is using 4TB drives in a RAID with this card. Adaptec 1430SA is also working out of the box - I have that. Don't know if it's available at your location. I would order at a shop with a decent return policy and return the card if it's not working with unRAID.
January 30, 201511 yr Author I did see that about the drives, and it makes me nervous. TBH, I like the x4 adaptec card anyway. I see there are several different models of the Adaptec 1430SA. Is this the one that works ootb with unRAID? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptec-1430SA-4-Port-SATA-PCI-E-x4-RAID-0-1-10-JBOD-Controller-Card/201266312872?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20141212152715%26meid%3D64bd517add824b4096ac0412026d896a%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D28%26sd%3D361105187345
January 30, 201511 yr I don't see where there are different models!? Yes, the one that I have looks like that.
January 30, 201511 yr Author I've seen: Adaptec RAID 1430SA 2241000-R SATAII PCI Express x4 and Adaptec RAID 1430SA 2240900-R SATAII PCI Express x4. I was just wondering if there's any difference. I think this is the card I'll purchase, especially if it works ootb, with >3TB drives.

January 30, 201511 yr Author Yes I see that the Startech is x2. Thanks though, I could see that saving someone from a bad purchase. Good looking out! I wouldn't think that with JBOD configuration for unRAID that the difference between x2 and x4 would make ALL that much difference. But seeing as I can use this Adapatec card, which is x4, and nice and cheap, that's the way I'm gonna go if I can get one around here.
January 30, 201511 yr PCIe x2 gen 2.0 is equivalent to PCIe x4 gen 1.0 Both should support 4 spinners at a decent speed. So far the maximum I've seen spinners at is 225MB/s for a 7200 RPM 6TB Hitachi on the outer tracks. Each x1 in Gen 1.0 ~ 250MB/s Each x1 in Gen 2.0 is double that. i.e. 500MB/s i.e. A PCI Express 1.x lane can transfer up to 250MB/s A PCI Express 2.x lane can transfer up to 500MB/s A PCI Express 3.x lane can transfer up to 1GB/s
January 30, 201511 yr Author That should be more than sufficient for my media server NAS purposes. Thanks again so much! I'll be purchasing this Adaptec now, I think. Although to be honest, what I was really looking for was something PCI-E 2.0 x4, with 4 sata ports, that worked ootb with unRAID. Is that speed even necessary for 4 HDD's? Or am better off just sticking with the PCI-E x4 or PCI-E 2.0 x2 (I'm aware that's the same theoretical speed)
