unRAID and Windows on same machine? ESXi?

Featured Replies

I'm building a new server/HTPC that I need to run Windows on for the HTPC piece and I'd like to run unRAID on it too for my parity solution.  (I've been using FlexRAID on the current server/HTPC that I'm repurposing for desktop use and I've been less than impressed with it compared to my original unRAID server which is still in use).  I believe it's possible to run ESXi with unRAID and Windows as guest OS?  Is this correct and would this be the only way to do it?  I don't really know anything about virtualization but I believe I have the right hardware for it except maybe my graphics card (Asus H97M-plus, Xeon E3-1230 v3 + GTX 750 ti) if someone could just point me in the right direction.  BTW I'll be running 8.1 pro (64 bit) for Windows if that makes any difference.  Thanks.

ESXi is one way to do it.

You could also use the built-in Virtualization capabilities in UnRAID v6, which would let you run UnRAID natively, but Windows as a VM.

There are several threads that discuss this -- it's an evolving feature as v6 nears the end of its Beta phase.

Interesting.  I will check that out.  Thanks Gary.
