February 23, 201511 yr So I was running some tests on my old cache drive as I i introduced it to the array as a general storage device. This stuck out : ID# ATTRIBUTE NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED FAILED RAW VALUE 5 Reallocated Sector Ct 0x0033 099 099 010 Pre-fail Always Never 4096 9 Power On Hours 0x0032 096 096 000 Old age Always Never 19374 12 Power Cycle Count 0x0032 099 099 000 Old age Always Never 39 177 Wear Leveling Count 0x0013 055 055 000 Pre-fail Always Never 1626 179 Used Rsvd Blk Cnt Tot 0x0013 099 099 010 Pre-fail Always Never 2 181 Program Fail Cnt Total 0x0032 100 100 010 Old age Always Never 0 182 Erase Fail Count Total 0x0032 099 099 010 Old age Always Never 1 183 Runtime Bad Block 0x0013 099 099 010 Pre-fail Always Never 1 187 Uncorrectable Error Cnt 0x0032 100 100 000 Old age Always Never 0 190 Airflow Temperature Cel 0x0032 074 054 000 Old age Always Never 26 195 ECC Error Rate 0x001a 200 200 000 Old age Always Never 0 199 CRC Error Count 0x003e 253 253 000 Old age Always Never 0 235 POR Recovery Count 0x0012 099 099 000 Old age Always Never 24 241 Total LBAs Written 0x0032 099 099 000 Old age Always Never 65488713544 Is it just a spooky coincidence its an exact large power off two (2^12 = 4096) or am I being a moron? Also debating what to do with this drive. never had any large Reallocated Sector on a SSD before although the number did no change pre and post a pre clear
February 23, 201511 yr I don't have any research to back this up, but my gut feeling is that you lost an entire address line on a chip, or something similar, that effected all 4096 sectors at once. Instead of reallocating onesies and twosies, SSD's might fail whole blocks at a time.
February 23, 201511 yr I would not suggest attempting to preclear an SSD. Wear leveling will redirect all of the writes anyway, so it really does nothing but add wear to the SSD.
February 23, 201511 yr Author yeah to be fair i done it without thinking and I was into it before I thought it through. It doesnt owe me much its been used pretty hard. It is now part of the main array and I am going to use it as a small file store take advantage of the inherent benefits of SSD. Will post back if any stats change just thought it was curious number. jonathanm you might be on to something.
