Windows 8 Network issue

Featured Replies

I'll try not to drag this out too much.

I've been running my Unraid server for probably over 4 years with 1 desktop, 2 HTPC's, and a laptop all running windows 7 without a single issues.  I sometimes have to deal with customer's computers for work, so about a year ago I put windows 8 on one of our HTPC's so I could get a little more familiar with it (even though I hated it) and for the life of me could never get it to find the server under network connections so I could browse the folders and get it to work with XBMC.  Got frustrated, dumped W8 and put W7 back on, and instantly everything worked like it always had.

Fast forward to today....I've got new parts coming to upgrade my desktop, so before I build that, I thought i'd check out the tech preview of Windows 10 on my current rig.  Installed it through windows updater (install was a breeze and everything works fine) and low and behold, I've got the exact same problem as I had when I tried to put W8 on my HTPC.  Server and PC are both part of WORKGROUP and I can log into the server via the IP address of the server using a browser no problem.

Anybody have any ideas?  I never had to do anything to get my W7 machines to see the server on the network, but for the life of me can't get these newer versions of windows to see it

Do you have unRAID set as the Local Master in SMB Settings?

Is this what you're talking about?  This is what I currently have my server set to:

FYI if I paste the IP address of the server in file explorer it'll bring up all the folders in the server and i can browse through them like normal

I'm surprised it works with Windows 7 since that server name has a space in it.

It's always been set as that and all 4 of my devices running windows 7 have had no trouble.  I did just discover that if I type the ip in file explorer it'll navigate to server, but if I type in \\Media Server it pops up a box that says Windows cannot access it and if I click on diagnose it returns a message saying your DNS server might be unavailable

Anybody have any ideas?  I opened up my laptop tonight and noticed without doing anything my laptop can see my new desktop running windows 8.1 and my old desktop running windows 10, and each of those machines can see my laptop just fine.  So basically all windows devices can see eachother on the network regardless of the version of windows, my windows 7 machines can see the server like always, but the machines running windows 8.1 and 10 can't see the server

tried all that, no luck

  • 4 weeks later...

windows 10 tech preview builds BEFORE 10041 (released this week) have this bug.  I am using build 10041 on spare PC and can see/browse shares on unRAID 5.0.5 system just fine.  no idea on the win 8.1 problem.
